Qatar - MTFX played a major role in the Opening Ceremony of the 15th Asian Games at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha in December, following more than nine months of planning.

MTFX was approached in April 2006 and asked to develop a very large low fog effect to fill the entire stadium floor in order to represent the sea as a ship passed across the stadium. After the development of several prototypes, the effect was achieved and the whole system manufactured and tested just two weeks before the shipping date.

The company also provided CO2 jets and a series of Sequenced Flame effects. As these were being built on to the top of 10m high structures which represented the City of the Future, each flame effect had to be custom-built on to each unique piece. Despite the adverse weather conditions, with the worst storm the country has seen for 25 years, the long months of planning and develo

USA - Red-haired zany comedian Carrot Top (Scott Thompson) is headlining at the Luxor in Las Vegas with the aid of Elation Professional Design Spot 250 moving head fixtures. Twelve of the automated 250W fixtures were recently installed at the Luxor venue, where Carrot Top is currently giving 280 performances a year, to provide "a new element to the show," said Dan O'Leary, production and tour manager for Carrot Top. "There were already 120 automated lights in the room, but we wanted something that would add a whole new dimension and give a completely different look," explained O'Leary.

"However, with so much lighting and trussing and a big video screen filling the stage area, space was at a premium. There are only a couple inches' clearance on either side of our video truss when you fly it up. We needed a fixture that would fit into our limited stage spa

New Zealand - With the release of the third and final model in the 'standard setting' Selecon Performer series of followspots, the range is now complete. Attendees of the ProLight&Sound show in Frankfurt (28-31 March) will be amongst the first in the world to check out the long-throw Toru 4°-8° followspot during its official debut.

Toru (the Maori word for 'three') delivers the same lift in efficiency, performance and operator features that were first realised in the wider angle Rua (9°-16°) and Tahi (18°-24°) models which were launched last year.

Delivering 1000 lux at 90m - 4° and 1000 lux at 53m - 8°, Toru provides the output to cut through the brightest outdoor or large venue entertainment lighting rig, near the output of Xenon units yet costing much, much less and only requiring a domestic outlet to power the unit, says Selecon.

UK - Bandit Lites UK is supplying the current Bryan Ferry UK and European tour with full lighting production and crew. This marks Bandit's first tour with the artist, whose hit-making career stretches back to the 1970s. Lighting designer for this tour is Graham Feast, and Bandit also worked with production manager, Jason Danter, on the project.

Bryan Ferry is performing songs from his new Dylanesque album, plus a few carefully selected classic Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music blockbusters. Ferry, a former fine art student, has some very clear ideas on visuals himself and is good at communicating these. Together, Ferry and Feast decided to make the show look totally different from a Roxy Music gig, keeping it moody, mysterious and with a definite 'sense of the unknown'.

On the first UK leg of the tour, they are playing concert halls and theatres. With no production rehearsals, j

UK - For chart topping Mika's current series of live dates, lighting designer Ian Tomlinson chose a mixture of fixtures, including: 12 PixelLine Micro Effects, 12 PixelLine 1044s, six PixelPars, six MAC 250 washes, six Mirrorballs and "lots of festoon".

The diverse rig allows Tomlinson to produce big theatrical effects, injecting visual creativity to the various characters that Mika brings to life during his shows. The Micros form an arch at the back of the stage and their high powered effects complemented the 1044s.

Tomlinson comments: "The Micros hold their own against the 1044s, I was very impressed and hopefully on the next tour we will introduce a media server. I'm pleased PixelLines are now available in different sizes, as it allows more flexibility in the rig - particularly when we are touring venues of different sizes."

Italy - Three grandMA full-size, one grandMA light, three MA mediaPCs with grandMA video and two NSPs were on the equipment list for the Deutsche Bank convention in Turin. Lighting designer Giovanni Pinna, who also worked as set designer and operator, had chosen MA technology for this event, because "we wanted to integrate a lot of video. With grandMA video we got a powerful tool that is easy to handle and provides a very fast and direct access of the media server content due to the integration into the MA-Net. No other media server on the market is that comfortable."

In total, three screens were used for the videos - one screen measured 12m x 2.5m and two screens for back-projection. Pinna relates: "The aim was to create a multimedia show based on animations, video effects and projections with the possibility to interact with special Deutsche Bank content, backgr

USA - City Theatrical has released its new line of Stackers tapered top hats. Stackers are designed to stack without sticking and to save space on the shelf and in transport, while maintaining all of the benefits of standard top hats.

Stackers' patent pending design allows them to stack neatly on the shelf, but a ridge on the top hat prevents sticking, no matter how much pressure is applied, the company says. All Stackers feature black flocked interiors to reduced light bounce and round frames to allow rotation of half top hats to the most advantageous angle.

A full line of 20 different varieties of Stackers are available including 6.25", 7.5", 10", 12" and 14" diameters in full, half, short full, and short half styles to suit the needs of lighting designers.

Top hats are used in lighting design for two primary purposes: to reduce spill light from li

Amos has been designing shows for Hurtwood House for several years, working with resident director Miles Russell and guest West End choreographers to create. This year, the designer decided to try a different approach to the show. "I persuaded Miles that rather than using the theatre in its standard end-on format, we should do the show side-on, using the full width of the theatre," he explains.

"This presented the production with many challenges in terms of audience seating, which had to be built from scratch, and the close proximity of the band to the audience. Luckily they have a great sound team at H
