USA - Founded in Houston in 1912, Rice University is Texas's most prestigious institution of higher education, a veritable ivy of the southern coastal plains! Although football has always been a big deal at Rice - much more so than at the traditional ivies - its importance has grown as the Rice University Owls have earned five bowl game appearances within in the last decade (the most recent appearance before that was 1961!).

To accommodate and even accelerate that momentum, the university recently invested $31.5m in the new 60,000sq.ft Brian Patterson Sports Performance Centre, which includes offices, locker rooms, student athlete lounges, a sports medicine centre, an auditorium, and a strength and conditioning centre. "We're using 14 Mozarts now, but I'd love to have 150," says show LD Herrick Goldman of HG Lighting Design Inc., New York. "Placed on vertical legs of truss at the back of the set, they're the perfect eye candy for imparting action and energy. Our director, Bob Conover, challenged us to make the room as kinetic and vibrant as possible while still shooting in the round.

Controlled with a GrandMA and bit-mapped for kinetic rainbow effects, we use Rosco diffusion for a slightly softer, homogenous image. They look great for a live audience as well as the TV viewers. Being a seven-ca

USA - Ben Coker, lighting designer for Porter Robinson and Madeon's co-headlining Shelter theatre tour, has just finished an extensive 34-date run in the US, with Robe BMFL Spots and WashBeams and Pointes prominent on the rig.

The decision to play primarily theatres and sit down venues has been hugely successful and allowed them to present their music in a different context and environment. The show took on the style and feel of a concert with individual songs / breaks in between, live vocals much of the time and a selection of live instruments introduced and played throughout the set from electric pianos to percussion.

It was something 'out-of-the-box' for the electronic music scene and different with a new and interesting energy from these two leading electronic artists. Ben started the design process well in advance, producing multiple concepts which were presented to t

World Beater - The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has awarded Adele its global artist of the year prize in recognition of her "simply phenomenal" success. Adele's achievement is particularly notable as her third album 25 was not released until late November. It went on to become the fastest selling album in British history. It sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week and with the album kept off streaming sites, its chart success was entirely made up of physical and download sales.

The second biggest selling artist of 2015 was Ed Sheeran - despite him not releasing a studio album during the course of the year. The IFPI says its top 10 chart is the only music industry ranking to accurately capture the worldwide popularity of artists across physical formats, downloads and streams.

USA - As part of an ongoing project to upgrade its technical infrastructure, Northside Christian Church in New Albany, Indiana, has recently purchased an SSL L300 live console.

Roberts, administrator at the church, provides oversight of technical infrastructure, drawing on his own extensive, high-end live sound and touring experience. Most recently, Roberts helped specify the new console: "It's very different when you work with only one or two key department heads and then everybody else is a volunteer," says Roberts. "They have to be set up for success. If you don't provide the right tools for the job, the volunteers can't enjoy it because they sense imminent failure all the time."

When Roberts came to Northside five years ago it already had

UK - New Order's recent UK and European tour in support of their latest album, Music Complete, featured a vibrant lighting design controlled via an Avolites Arena console.

The tour marked the first time lighting designer Andrew Liddle opted for the Arena - Avolites' latest console.

"I was really keen to give the Arena a try and it proved very worthwhile," says Liddle. "I saw it to be a natural progression from the Avolites Tiger Touch I've been using since 2010, and found it to be a whole lot more. Hardware wise, it's the complete package - lid off and good to go. For what it is, it's really compact, not too bulky or weighty, and the layout's great and the second screen is useful too."

Alongside the main display, the Arena offers a second touch screen providing an additional workspace window and also labelling the adjacent macro buttons and rotary pots. These fu

France Over 300 Robe BMFL fixtures were sold to the French market in the few months since the formation of Robe's new French subsidiary, Robe Lighting France SAS.

The BMFL was launched in autumn 2014, by which time French lighting professionals were ready to specify and keen to use the high-powered multi-purpose luminaire, and as soon as the new company was established, the business could 'hit-the-ground-running'.

"BMFL sales far exceeded our initial annual expectations and we steamed past those first targets in just six months," commented a delighted Bruno Garros, CEO of Robe Lighting France, who added that - given that the new company was formed just a few months after the launch of Robe's flagship moving light.
