Sweden - Wireless Solution Sweden AB was also involved with Alingsås. W-DMX was used on two of the six project sites, helping to make the event greener than ever, much to the delight of the designers and organizers of the event, which saw approximately 75,000 visitors.

The team working on first of the two sites using W-DMX was headed by German lighting designer Karl M. Reger. His team developed and realized a concept for Kabomhuset's façade and car park. He used a WE-EF gobo projector (WE-EF FLC254 CC-BL) that was controlled via W-DMX.

Says Reger, "The majority of our installation was indoors and the control signal was fed through cables. However, there was one DMX-controlled luminaire outside the building, and it would have been near to impossible to do without the wireless DMX system here because we could not run cables through the windows. This is where Wireless Solu

UK - Southbank Centre is adopting a more flexible approach to digital sound mixing through its three flagship venues, the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room - thanks to the acquisition of several Soundcraft Vi1's from Richard Nowell Sound Services (RNSS).

Based at London's Southbank Centre, the experienced rental company has been servicing the audio requirements of the concert halls for many years.

Technical director, Eddy Smith, decided that a more flexible platform was needed for incoming sound engineers than was offered by their existing digital desks. "We didn't feel the sound of the preamps was as good as we wanted, nor were the configurations particularly user friendly - which was important when shows needed to be set up quickly."

He asked Richard Nowell to arrange a three-desk shoot-out and the Vi1 came out on top in terms of usabilit

Italy - Billy Cobham played to an excited large crowd cramming St Peter Square in Galatina, on the latest stop on his Palindrome Tour. It was one of the highlights of the 12th season of the Cloister Concerts.

For the occasion GM Music Service chose Proel Axiom for sound reinforcement and used the new KPTAX3222I coupling bar for the first time in its set-up.

The audience was enthusiastic, as Giampaolo Tarantini, one of the owners of GM Music, reports, "We had no choice but to opt for a system that could guarantee very high quality and power for a talented artist such as Billy Cobham. Axiom, as usual, did the business. The audience was absolutely pleased and excited by the quality of the sound Proel equipment provided for this musician and his band, whose performance included a full range of tunes ranging from jazz to funk, and from rock to soul."

France - On the eve of this year's Mondial de l'Automobile, the brands represented by the Volkswagen Group introduced a fleet with a difference. Allez les Marques! was the title of the spectacular Volkswagen Group Night.

For the four weeks leading up to the event, the team of Leyendecker - Lightvision Sound & Service, and technical supervisor Martin Kuhn had reconstructed a former freight railway station near Paris into a show stage for each single premiere of the fleet.

Responsible for the lighting design was Nik Evers. Amongst other fixtures, he specified a total of 120 GLP impression RZ heads for this event, which were used for the illumination of the architecture, the lounge and the after-show area, as well as for the show itself.

In the past, Evers has used the impression 90 but now focused on the zoom effect. "Due to its low weight and low power cons

Mexico - Mexico City's famous El Zócalo (Plaza of the Constitution) was lit up for 15 days between 14-21 November as YO Mexico formed part of celebrations marking the centenary of the beginning of the country's revolution and the Bicentennial of its independence.

This 75-minute-long nightly multimedia spectacular featured 86 high-powered XLED 590 heads from PR Lighting over the three big stages (and catwalk) as more than 300 artists performed through five acts, depicting Mexico's colourful history. This showed the country's cultural wealth and moments that shaped the nation through music, dance, vocals, pyrotechnics, lighting and image projection.

This was one of several events that have taken place in the famous plaza recently, but Sebastian Corkidi of Simply Professional - who again provided all the PR Lighting effects, stated, "This was both bigger and better t

Japan - Matsuda Trading Corporation (MTC Japan) has struck a deal with Adamson for exclusive distribution in the Japanese market. MTC, well known for representing Lab.gruppen, Turbosound and Tannoy, currently lists Adamson as their exclusive pro speaker brand.

MTC first took interest in Adamson after meeting at a series of tradeshows. "I was introduced to MTC by a mutual friend. It was clear from our first meeting that there was a great connection between Adamson and MTC. We have a similar vision of the marketplace and how to put Adamson where it belongs in Japan. To start, we plan to offer an introduction seminar in Japan in the new year. We are looking forward to a strong future with a strong partner like MTC," stated Jesse Adamson, Adamson's director of marketing and sales.

MTC's first order of business is to get the product out to the public, and Interbee, which

With the addition of Coral Cooper, the 2010 Knights of Illumination Lifetime Achievement Award-winner, Philips Vari-Lite recently held technical training seminars in the UK and Spain with more planned in Germany, Austria and throughout the continent.

"As we move forward with expanding our training programmes for our European customers, it is crucial that we have the infrastructure in place to support our distributors and their technicians," said Julie Smith, Philips Vari-Lite support services director. "When we had the opportunity to ask Coral to join us for this initiative we were extremely excited. It is not often that a person of her expertise and industry reputation becomes available. Netherlands Protest - Dutch singers, painters and TV presenters have demonstrated in the Netherlands against government plans to slash arts funding. The Dutch government has pledged to cut 200m euros (£171m) from its arts budget over the next five years. It has also approved plans to raise sales tax on theatre, cinema and concert tickets from 6% to 19%.

Organisers said the cuts had been justified by lawmakers who argued the arts were only for the "wealthy elite". "A 13% rise in sales tax hits all of the public because tickets get more expensive," organisers said in a manifesto published online. "By cutting culture budgets and raising tax on tickets, culture will become an elitist pastime and less accessible for people with less money."

In Amsterdam, around 20,000 people gathered on Saturday afternoon on the Leidseplein to listen to music and

UK - Visual production specialists Bluman Associates brought Pottermania to the heart of London, working with Lucy Smail of West Design & Production on the premiere for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

With the Empire and the Odeon, Leicester Square's two largest cinemas, screening the film, the event attracted one of the biggest crowds for a London movie premiere. Fencing was removed from the Square's gardens to allow the TV crews and fans to gather, as the Harry Potter stars moved through a predetermined layout to sign autographs and give interviews.

On behalf of West Design, which was masterminding all technical production including lighting and sound, Bluman Associates erected two 9m x 4m high video screens, set up in cinemascope format, to show a specially edited trailer for the film, interspersed with interview footage relayed live from the Square.

UK - Truss rarely enjoys a celebration of form over function, but there's always the exception . . . The set of the National Theatre's current production of Hamlet, staged at the Olivier Theatre, on London's South Bank.

In plain sight on the stage sits a framework of truss comprising three six-metre towers per side, supporting 12.5 metre stretches of Thomas 30.5cm box truss. Set designer Vicki Mortimer wanted to create a stark and oppressive space for the production's media-driven surveillance state of Elsinore, where the themes of duplicity and the paranoia of always being watched are brought to the fore.

She explains: "We were looking for a containing structure which would communicate layers of meaning to the audience including an acknowledgment of the theatrical metaphors in Hamlet, and establish most particularly the constraints of a society designed to

Europe - The Peter Gabriel New Blood, Scratch My Back Tour features the singer and a 54-piece orchestra - No drums, no guitars. Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra performed cover songs to sellouts at amphitheaters and arenas throughout Europe this spring and fall. Audinate's digital media networking technology Dante was chosen by Brit Row Productions as a key part of the production package.

Because of the complexities of delivering an even orchestral sound to large arena audiences, a number of finely controlled zones were required. Richard Sharrat, FOH engineer for the tour, used nine sends from the Digico SD-7 to Dante enable products. In order to ensure that these sends were combined properly, a Yamaha DME 64 with a Dante-MY16-AUD was used to transfer the AES outputs of the console to the entire Dante network.

The DME also allows for fine system matrix control and te

USA - Aviom Personal Mixers are helping the audio staff at Sunset Christian Centre in Rocklin, CA, win the war against loud stage volume. The Aviom personal mixing system, along with an upgrade to the acoustics of the space, has helped Sunset Christian Centreadapt its sanctuary, originally designed for a traditional worship service comprised of a choir and piano, to a more contemporary form of worship.

Stage volume became a challenge when the loudness of monitor wedges and guitar amps began competing with the PA system. In addition, there was a constant struggle to make each performer comfortable with his monitor mix. What would make one musician happy would be wrong for the next one. The Aviom Personal Mixers, along with in-ear monitoring systems, have solved these challenges, allowing the musicians to customize their monitor mixes while also reducing the extra volume caused by

UK - Flare Audio supplied the sound system for the UK Festival Awards and Conference 2010 which took place at Indigo2 at The O2 London on 18 November. Stealth Array X4 was used at the main awards with the V series for the awards conference.

Flare Audio MD Davies Roberts comments, "We were brought in to replace the existing in-house system at the Indigo2 that comprises a total of 45 speakers and 32 amplifiers. We set up Stealth Array X4 as a ground stack to cover both the lower and upper tiers, comprising of just two X4H and two X4L Stealth Array a side, with just one speaker covering each side of each tier. Four CF182 double 18" bass enclosures were positioned each side with the entire system being powered by three PLM10000Q and two PLM14000 Lab Gruppen amplifiers.

"This was also a great chance for us to show off the horizontal coupling of Stealth Array X4 and j

Italy - After winning the award for innovation at the PLASA show in London last September, and the award for creativity in Las Vegas at the end of October, Coemar's LED Reflection projectors have been chosen to light up Velasco Vitali's exhibition at the Royal Palace of Milan from 13 November to 3 December.

This exhibition is marked by a detailed study of the lights, and a subsequent technological project by the architect Alexander Bellman. The route of the exhibition, culminating in Vitali's dog sculptures, is ideal for really showing off the revolutionary characteristics that Coemar has applied to a projector based on LED technology: an extraordinary softness, the entire range of whites, and the total absence of pixels and multiple shadows.

Coemar has managed to achieve these results by focusing the light from the LEDs onto a reflective surface that then sends out an even be

USA - When the acoustical tiles became frozen in place in Whitney Hall at the Kentucky Centre for the Arts, theatre consultants Westlake, Reed, Leskosky turned to J. R. Clancy.

The 2,400-seat Whitney Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, is the heart of the arts centre, presenting a full range of performances year-round: touring Broadway shows, productions by the Kentucky Opera and the Louisville Ballet, and concerts by the Louisville Symphony Orchestra.

To accommodate the acoustical requirements of so many different groups, Whitney Hall's ceiling includes wooden acoustical tiles that can be repositioned to adjust the sound quality. Recently, however, the hydraulic hoists that control these tiles have become stuck in place, so house acousticians can no longer adjust the house to improve the sound.

J. R. Clancy will replace the hall's original hydraulic hoist system - installed when

UK - Rihanna switched on the Christmas lights at Westfield Shopping Centre in London, with Arcstream AV supporting the star's appearance with a spectacular laser show.

Arcstream AV provided four lasers for the performance including a 10watt Full Colour, two 6 watt Green OPS systems and an 8 watt Green OPS, to create a stunning effect as Rihanna pushed the button on Westfield's Christmas installations.

Arcstream AV's managing director Neil Dickinson reports, "Westfield was looking for an effect which would engage the huge crowd this event always pulls in, and lasers are a brilliant way of creating an effect in a large space. We used 20 diffraction mirrors placed throughout the atrium area sending beams literally everywhere to cover the massive audience."

Simon Jones, technical manager of Westfield London adds, "The lasers were a perfect solution for a light swi

USA - Multi-Grammy award winning double bass player John Patitucci has selected DPA 4099 instrument clip mic and 4021 compact cardioid for his live work as a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet.

Patitucci and the Quartet's sound engineer Rob Griffin were instrumental in providing their input to the design of the DPA 4099B for bass. They worked together with DPA designers to develop a light, non-invasive rubber mount for the 4099, which fits onto the bass strings between the bridge and the tailpiece. A small gooseneck fitting allows for greater flexibility in moving and positioning the mic into different positions in relation to the top of the bass. Griffin's FOH mix is boosted by the 4021, which is also fixed to Patitucci's bass.

"I've been working for years to get a natural live sound that is closer to the acoustic sound of my instrument," says Patitucci. "I lo

UK - The current production of Mozart's Don Giovanni from Glyndebourne includes a special conclusion to the end of Act 1. Set in the ballroom of the palazzo, God intervenes to encase Don Giovanni in a private hell, assisted by Howard Eaton Lighting Limited.

Directed by Jonathan Kent, designed by Paul Brown and lit by Mark Henderson, the production demanded a fire effect on stage at the end of the Act. Howard Eaton was presented with the challenge, "At the end of Act 1 there needs to be a lightning bolt from the heavens that results in Don Giovanni's palazzo being torched," he says.

Paul Brown's set was designed on the theme of a Pandora's Box, set on a huge revolve with the chamber's walls moving to reveal each scene. Director Jonathan Kent wanted the production to be fluid, "a white knuckle ride", and this added to the list of theatrical demands for

UK - Adlib Audio supplied three Soundcraft Vi consoles to BBC Worldwide for the recent Doctor Who Live tour, which visited nine major UK arenas in October and November.

This action-packed stage version of the cult TV series stars a selection of classic and favourite Doctor Who monsters including The Daleks and Cybermen, with Nigel Planer as 'intergalactic showman' and archetypal baddie, Vorgenson.

The tour's 270 degree sound system was specified by XL Events' Rich Rowley, who was also instrumental in choosing Adlib to supply the kit. The sound company itself fielded a vastly experienced team, including Tony Szabo (systems engineer), Chris Leckie (FOH, on a Soundcraft Vi6), with Fergus Mount handling audio playback on a Soundcraft Vi1, and Marc Peers mixing monitors on a second Vi6. All desks were originally supplied by Sound Technology.

Australia - On Sunday 19 September more than 34,000 competitors took part in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, marking and celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the event which includes the Marathon, Half Marathon & Bridge Run.

Event Sound supplied the audio for the four event zones choosing to use JBL speakers with VRX 932LAP being their main box of choice. Other boxes used as distributed systems and entertainment stage monitors included JBL SRX700 series and JBL Eon510 speakers.

The Start Site at North Sydney has proved to be quite challenging in the past with a focused concentration of sound required for the three-zoned start areas without infringing too much on the residential buildings.

"Fortunately with the VRX system we were able to accomplish a directional system providing great clarity and throw across the areas that we needed to cover," stated Keith C
