USA - The Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George, the award winning transfer from London, by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a musical celebration of life, love, art, and the spirit of creation. This production doesn't just explore creativity in the story, but takes a visibly different design approach to the scenery and lighting.

This technically innovative production makes extensive use of projections and LED screens, so precise control of the lighting was of paramount importance to lighting designer Ken Billington when he joined the creative team for the Broadway production. "The show is all projection; it is a beige box with a brown wood floor and all the scenery is projected. My design approach was to compliment the projection while avoiding having to go too dark. Luckily, the projectors were strong so I didn't hav

UK - 5 Star Cases has installed new machinery at its Cambridgeshire, UK HQ. The investment will help deal with the increased production demands following the winning of numerous new accounts and projects in recent weeks, says the company.

The first machine is used to pre-punch aluminium profiles prior to their being fixed on to the cases. The system is based around a 'stock' machine manufactured and supplied by Penn-Elcom. A powerful pneumatic cylinder forms the basis of the system together with heavy duty machined linkages and pivot points. The base machine can be used for multiple applications including punching, cropping and notching.

Once the machines are delivered from Penn-Elcom, they are heavily customised by 5 Star's engineering department headed by Phil Bailey.

The second machine installed, was again supplied by Penn-Elcom. It is an extrusion profile crimp, speciall

UK The Sound Division Group recently provided the lighting and sound production for a major charity event at Wilton's Music Hall in East London. The celebrity-packed was jointly organised by 'Glasses Direct' on-line retailer, Jamie Murray Wells and Guy Pelly.

The occasion was in aid of the memorial fund established in memory of Henry van Straubenzee tragically lost his life in a car accident - and which donates to school building projects in Uganda. Seven new schools have been completed with five more planned.

Guy Pelly, of Mayfair celebrity haunt, Mahiki, had got in touch with Sound Division's David Graham, whose long-standing relationship with fellow directors, Nick House and Piers Adams, led to the recommendation. David Graham was delighted to have been asked to participate. "The occasion was in aid of a most worthy cause and yet promised to be a fun event at the same

Germany - A successful visit to Frankfurt's ProLight & Sound resulted in Cologne-based CVT Veranstaltungsservice placing an order for a Soundcraft Vi4 digital mixing console, with German distributors Audio Pro Heillbron.

Jörg Vonten's rental company covers a wide range of shows and events - from rock 'n' roll to industrial - but he has always used Soundcraft mixing desks. "I am very much a 'one man' organisation - but I use first class freelance engineers," he says.

"I had already experienced working on other digital desks but I needed something that sounded better - and would match the quality of the MH3. The last thing I wanted to do was take a backwards step."

UK - When The Kooks' LD, Pete 'Luton' Hosier, was introduced to GLP Impression LED moving washlights while controlling the set for the TPi Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel, he decided to use them for the Kooks' European tour that was about to follow.

Ian Kirby, who runs LED-Lites - the UK distributor for GLP - had seized the opportunity to make an impression and merged 24 of the fixtures into HSL's design for the production awards.

Coincidentally, Pete Hosier had been asked by Avolites' Steve Warren to pilot the company's Diamond 4 lighting board at the gala event - and surveyed the fixtures he had to work with.

"But when we undid [the GLP] box of tricks I fell in love with them straight away. I knew the Impressions would be perfect for the tour."

The Kooks' lighting production company Colour Sound Experiment purchased 12 fixtures and Hosier set to work

Finland - As the leading telecommunications provider in the Nordic and Baltic countries, TeliaSonera needs to think carefully about what the thousands of people who pass through its Finnish headquarters see in the company's entrance hall. Now, with a 12sq.m, 200" Supernova Infinity screen, installed by Oy Hedcom Ab, greeting visitors, TeliaSonera Finland is literally projecting its innovative, state-of-the art image.

"We wanted something 'crazy' at the entrance - a striking view which people will remember and which stops everyone who enters the building," says Risto Huostila, responsible for TeliaSonera's functions and AV acquisitions. The screen is by far the biggest installation in Finland using this technology.

The exterior wall of the entrance hall is made primarily of glass, resulting in a bright projection environment that would present a challenge for sta

UK - Three ETC Source Four luminaires were spotted last weekend at London's Cans Festival, a free street party dedicated to the art of graffiti. Although described as a 'stencil only' exhibition, the festival included several installation pieces, including this take on the effectiveness (or otherwise) of CCTV, the only art work to be specifically lit.

For those who missed the hype in the national press, a group of international street artists, led by the UK's Banksy, transformed a dank, disused rail tunnel at Waterloo station into a vibrant and exciting art gallery for the three day weekend. While the installation pieces have probably already been dismantled, it is hoped that the wall art may be there for a while yet.

Taiwan - A new temple at the headquarters of one of Taiwan's most famous Buddhist monasteries - Fo Guang Shan in Kaohsiung - has been fitted with a complete QSC Audio system solution - right through the signal chain.

FGS is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan, with branches throughout the world. Founded in 1967 by the Ven. Master Hsing Yun, it set the bar high when specifying its requirement for both speech and musical applications. The sound needed to be pure and transparent - without colouration.

To achieve this objective, the project's main contractor, Session Audio Research, had favoured a complete one stop solution - with processor, amplifiers and loudspeakers all coming from the same manufacturer; they reached the conclusion that QSC provided the best option in terms of both performance and reliability, and specified an Installation Line Array (ILA) as the main soun

USA - As the first non-baseball event for the new Nationals Stadium and the initial step of a high profile journey across the Eastern US, the Papal Mass in Washington D.C. presented a set of challenges for one of the area's leading production companies, MHA Audio.

Asked about producing audio at the elegantly proportioned stadium with its own state of the art system, owner Mike Scarfe explains: "We couldn't use the existing audio system because, as with all stadiums, the sound comes from above and behind the audience; and since the stage for the Papal Mass was at one end and it would have been impossible to time-align it to the stage. We provided sound for the entire stadium and 47,000 people from 60ft towers on either side of the stage. Basically, we had a 550ft throw from the speaker tower to the farthest seat."

Recently cited in the Guinness Book of Records as having the tallest proscenium arch at 11.95m, the venue was in need of some lighting fixtures with a reputation of similar stature. Project lighting designer Poon Limpapun turned to French lantern manufacturers, Robert Juliat.

"The Robert Juliat 700SX range really fits our criteria," explains Limpapun. "With throwing distances from our front electrics bars of over 30m, the 2000W Profiles do their job very well. Overall, I can say that they exceeded our expectations."
