Germany - In December 2003, the Central Stadium in Leipzig, which had taken three years to build at a cost of 88.5 million euros, was opened - one of the 12 venues selected to host the world's most watched sporting event - football's World Cup. Its first game, Match 6 of the competition, will kick off at 15:00 on the 11 June 2006.

One of the most important, if not the most important, area covered by the FIFA regulations is stadium safety, in which the quality of the alarm and public address systems is of crucial importance. Like many of the top football stadiums in Europe, the Central Stadium is equipped with a sound system from EVI Audio; in this case, a Dynacord ProAnnounce, comprising DPM 4000 digital system controllers, DCS 420 monitor units and DPA 4140 power amplifiers, installed with support from Sigma TBL of Chemnitz.

India - V & P Sounds, Bangalore's leading pro audio equipment rental house, recently augmented its inventory with the purchase of a 48-mono-/four-stereo-channel Soundcraft MH3 desk (Touring Pack). This was supplied by Cinetekk, the distributor for the Harman Pro Group in India.

"We've chosen to standardize on the second largest configuration of the MH3 because it basically offers everything we need in a board of that size - VCAs, muting capabilities, user-friendliness, client acceptability, and an economical price tag," says Mr. Vishnu, founder and owner of V & P Sounds. "Also, the fact that these boards can do monitors and house sound equally well is a big plus inventory-wise.

"Everyone seems to really like the MH3, including a lot of engineers who have never previously mixed on it, because it's still a relatively new console. I'm not at all surprised by t

This year, ESS chose to use Universal Aerial Platforms for its powered access requirements. "Choosing the right powered access, on time and at the right price, is key for achieving our goals, since it assists in so many parts of the job - right from set-up to final snagging work," says Vicki Wiseman, buyer at ESS.

She continued: "With Universal's good previous track record with us, combined with their competitive prices, large fleet and in-house logistics, we were confident of a first-rate service."

The Genie S85 with its fly jib and robust construction and ability to scale well above the apex of even the main stage was the ideal plant for the job, say ESS, who selected the plant from

USA - The Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills, SD is a very high profile installation. At 563 feet high and 641ft long it's also not just a profile, but a massive three-dimensional sculpture. Chief Crazy Horse, and the mount he rode in on, is being carved and blasted out of mountainside in Rapid City, South Dakota. The project has been a work-in-progress for 57 years - and completion is not in sight.

The memorial to Crazy Horse was the life long work of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) who came to the Black Hills at the invitation of Chief Henry Standing Bear of the Oglala Lakota tribe: "My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes too," said the Chief's invitation. This year, the second week of June found Rotterdam hosting 700,000 spectators for the second of eight races in the newly created World Series. USA - The government of San Luis Obispo County, California recently moved into its new administration building. The move was the culmination of more than five years of designing and building a facility tailored to its specific and varying needs.

The slow pace of design and construction was a reflection of the desire to get everything correct. This was particularly evident in the increasingly vital area of audio/visual and information technology, according to Joey D'Angelo, principal consultant with Charles M. Salter Associates, Inc., the San Francisco-based consulting firm who designed the facility's A/V system.

The design specification went through several incarnations, but one element recommended by D'Angelo at the outset remained on the list: SymNet Audio Matrix from Symetrix. "Much of the project's architecture and A/V system design changed over the years, but the rec

Sound Division's David Graham described the brief: "Given that there was already an existing sound system in the premises when Shish took it over, we weren't required to start from scratch. However, a fair amount of work was needed to bring the installation in to line with the rest of the venue. We completely serviced the existing WORK loudspeakers and Cloud mixer amplifier, and added two DBX 215 dual graphics and a Pioneer PDM603 6-disc multiplay CD player. The restaurant space has been reconfigured into three separate zoned areas so we've provided three Cloud RSL6 devic

Although much of AVFX's emphasis has always been on visual media (multi-image projection was the rage when the company started in the early 1980s), the company has also supplied sound systems for years. One of their long-time audio mainstays has been the classic UPA-1A loudspeaker, which AVFX started using many years before the self-powered UPA-1P became available.
