UK Rental company HSL continued its working relationship with Production North, supplying the lighting design and equipment to the recent Olly Murs UK tour.

The chart topping singer/songwriter and runner up of X-Factor 2009 has evolved a live performance style of his own, cutting a new and fresh model from that of other successful reality TV contestants who follow up with solo careers. Show producer Beth Honan's stage set was designed with a ska/2 Tone flourish, and Murs' performance included some Madness inspired quirks and a generally up-beat, jaunty tone, backed by a nine- piece band including full brass section.

The lighting design was created by Phil Wiffin for HSL. Dave Lee operated and looked after everything on the road, working alongside tech Johnny Harper. HSL's

Europe - An addition to the Philips Entertainment LED lighting arsenal is the Philips Strand Lighting LightPack LED controller.

Grant Bales Smith, sales manager for UK, Scandinavia and Benelux for Philips Entertainment EMEA explains, "Smart addressing technology has simplified LED fixture set up by ensuring that end users can quickly address any luminaire in the Philips PLTR1 range.

"The range features three types - the PLTR1W (Tunable White Flood), the PLTR1RGB (RGB Colour Mixing) and the PLTR1RGBAW (five colour unit with tunable colour temp settings). Each one has different channel requirements and differing features.

"The LightPack LED controller can sense which unit is which and assigns the correct number of channels. It can also include a virtual dimmer channel and is capable of setting the mode of a fixture i.e. 8 or 16 bit. The LightPack LED controller'

USA - Since opening its doors in 1981, the Blue Note in New York City has become one of the world's premier jazz clubs, playing host to some of the genre's greatest musicians. When the venue's audio system needed to be upgraded, Yamaha's TXn amplifiers were chosen.

Installed by audio specialists Petrix, the club's layout and famous nightly opening made for a challenging installation.

"While the acoustic characteristics of the room are good, the venue is 'in the round' and there is only 15.5' from the front of the stage to the wall at the rear of the venue, 30' to the left and 46' to the right. The ceiling is low and the 200 seats are lined up right against the stage, all the way to the walls," says Petrix owner Amit Peleg.

Because of the layout and the music being mostly acoustic, 80% of the audience sits within 20' of the stage, so a lot of stage sound is audible.

Germany - From the beginning of September 2011, MA Lighting, its German distributor Lightpower and the media academy once again offer all current and upcoming grandMA2 users in Germany access to the MA University training programme in Paderborn.

This is in addition to the training programme that is offered in cooperation with the media academy in Berlin, so customers now have an additional choice of location to visit for their training.

All training dates are published on the Lightpower website (www.lightpower.de). More information about the MA University can be found there as well, together with full details of the training, including an in depth explanation.

UK - Production company LarMac LIVE (LML) was brought in to production manage and co-ordinate all technical aspects of the 2011 UK Sonisphere Festival.

Staged in the grounds of Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, the three-day event saw a feast of metallic aristocracy, music and antics, headlined by Metallica, Biffy Clyro and Slipknot respectively, with some eccentric curved balls lobbed in the programming mix like Bill Bailey, who topped the Stage 2 line up on Sunday.

It was the first time that LarMac LIVE has worked on a Sonisphere event. The UK is one of 12 such events worldwide, making it the largest touring festival, and LML's Ian Greenway took up the production management reins, assisted by Anthony Norris. LML was working for Stuart Galbraith from Sonisphere's promoters Kilimanjaro Live.

The main technical suppliers for Stages 1 and 2 were PRG for lighting and Britannia Ro

UK - Grey skies and a spattering of rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of more than 300 industry clients and friends attending White Light's Open Day last Thursday - an event that allowed guests to explore White Light's new additional warehouse space, get hands-on with some of the latest lighting products, enjoy some great food, fine company, and be entertained by music from White Light's in-house band.

The new warehouse space, directly adjacent to White Light's existing building in Wimbledon, south-west London, gives White Light an additional 20,000sq.ft of working space, which will be used to accommodate the company's ever growing range of sales products, to provide additional pre-rig space for tours and other shows, and to create a demo area that will allow lighting designers to try out equipment in a decent sized space, or even to hang rigs for pre-lighting or rehearsal.

China - Singer songwriter Jacky Cheung, regarded as the 'God of Songs' in the Chinese community, recently played a run of 20 dates at the Hong Kong Coliseum. A variety of DPA microphones was used for the concerts.

For Cheung's vocal, the DPA 4088 miniature cardioid headband was used. The 4088 has long been used for Cheung's acoustically demanding concert performances where sound quality, visual elegance, background noise and feedback are concerns, as it has been proven to tackle these challenges with ease.

For the musicians, six DPA 4099S and 4099T live clip mics were applied for the horn section which included trombone, trumpet, alto and tenor sax. A combination of 11 DPA 4061 miniatures and 4099V were used for the string section which included violin, viola and cello.

"DPA microphones are commonly regarded as standard for live miking," says monitor engineer Mike

UK - Liverpool based rental company Adlib supplied lighting, sound, AV and considerable presentational expertise in the genre of live comedy to the recent Good Mourning Mrs Brown UK arena & theatre tour starring Irish comedian, Brendan O'Carroll.

Wanting to retain the intimacy and feel of the original theatre show, a pros arch look was recreated at the front of the stage with black drapes and theatre tabs, with the two left and right IMAG video screens incorporated into the draping system. Side masking and a full set of legs was also supplied by the Adlib team, who used the house black upstage at each venue.

The tour's production was designed by Martin Delany & Adlib Design's Peter Abraham who says, "The set & design haven't changed dramatically over the last 10 years just the technology used to create the effects makes our lives easier. The biggest challenge was r

UK - Manchester based lighting design and rental company DBN is often involved in interesting and esoteric arts-based projects, but particularly during the Manchester International festival (MIF), their collective ingenuity and sense of adventure is called on to collaborate in some truly evocative and different works.

This was the case when Stephen Page was invited by MIF to illuminate a performance by virtuoso Russian-born violinist Alina Ibragimova in collaboration with filmmakers and animators, The Brothers Quay. It was staged in and around the Library of the historic Chetham's School of Music, Manchester.

The atmospheric promenade performance for 100 people each evening introduced them to several different locations in the heart of Chetham's 600 year old centre of learning, where Ibragimova performed four different solo violin pieces by Berio, Bach, Biber and Bartók.

USA - Turning the clock back two decades, boy bands New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys have joined forces in a major American sell-out arena tour this summer under the soubriquet NKOTBSB.

In order to allow the bands to engage at close quarters with their hordes of screaming fans, production designer Butch Allen designed a 91ft catwalk leading from the main stage to a 'B' stage - using no fewer than 79 GLP Volkslicht Zoom LED spots to edge the perimeter of the vast 155ft-wide main and subsidiary stages - including 17 footlights down each side of the thrust. The complex staging and movement was fabricated by Tait Towers.

"Since the whole set design was based around the 91ft thrust, my idea was to use the Volkslichts as footlights, to carve the space out around the audience," said Allen, explaining the concept.

The tour has seen him reunited with Jesse Blevins

Italy - ETC dealers from across central and southern Europe got to view the company's new Rome office - and experience legendary Italian hosting - earlier this month, as part of ETC's annual Dealer Focus event.

In a series of talks and seminars over the course of three days, delegates learned about new ETC products, projects and systems.

Part of the event centred on ETC's latest LED fixtures, Selador Desire, which comes in a range of different options, each optimised for every type of lighting need.

Selador's x7 Colour System adds four colours to the traditional RGB mix, radically expanding the colour range and power. The range was specifically designed to mix well with traditional tungsten lighting, giving lighting designers the best of both worlds. Desire's optional red shift mode mimics the way the colour temperature of a tungsten lamp warms as it fades.
