NBC Congrescentrum features an L-Acoustics K Series sound system in an innovative mirrored audio configuration

Netherlands - Following a devastating fire in 2022, the NBC Congrescentrum in Nieuwegein has emerged from its ashes not just rebuilt, but technologically transformed. This premier Dutch event venue, which evolved from a modest meeting space in 1992 to hosting up to 4,000 guests today, now features a sophisticated L-Acoustics K Series sound system with a design innovation: when two large halls combine into one space, four precisely positioned line arrays seamlessly integrate to deliver consistent audio coverage throughout.

L-Acoustics Certified Partner AudioBizz collaborated with René Doeser, project leader for the NBC, from Dutch system integrator AVEX to overcome NBC's primary challenge: creating a versatile system that not only satisfies demanding production riders but also integrates seamlessly with the venue's architectural aesthetics.

"We created a unique design where two large event halls can function independently or combine into one cohesive space," explains Edwin Lam of AVEX, who worked with AudioBizz to engineer the system using L-Acoustics Soundvision software. "When the dividing wall is removed, four carefully positioned line arrays work together as a unified sound solution."

The system features identical configurations in Event Halls 1 and 2. Each space includes left/right arrays composed of six Kara IIi line arrays, complemented by three KS21i subwoofers flown centre stage. For front-fill, three 5XT speakers are positioned along the vertical stage edge, while two X8 speakers on the stage floor provide stage monitoring. Additional low-frequency reinforcement comes from two KS28 subwoofers mounted on the stage's vertical edge.

The entire system is driven by LA12X and LA4X amplifiers, harnessing the advanced capabilities of Kara IIi, such as variable inter-element angles and Panflex technology for precisely controlled horizontal sound dispersion.

"The Kara IIi offers industry-leading sound pressure levels relative to its weight," notes Nico Smidt, sales director at AudioBizz. "This makes it ideal for NBC Congrescentrum, where both speech intelligibility and musical clarity are essential across diverse event types. The system's flexible mounting options allowed us to integrate it discreetly within the venue's architectural framework, preserving aesthetics while maximising acoustic performance."

The venue's audio evolution continues, with plans to enhance Event Halls 1 and 2 with four additional KS21 subwoofers and LA12X amplification for increased low-frequency response. The third space, the Grand Hall, is scheduled for a complete upgrade incorporating another Kara IIi system to complement existing L-Acoustics amplifiers, establishing consistent audio quality across all event spaces.

"When the sound is perfect, you can feel the energy shift in the room," says Mark van Hooijdonk, managing director of NBC Congrescentrum. "Our investment in L-Acoustics technology demonstrates our commitment to creating exceptional experiences that resonate with clients and guests alike. We now feature the largest projection surface in Europe, but our transformation extends beyond technology - it's about crafting memorable moments that endure long after each event concludes."
