Denmark - No stranger to the principles of Source Oriented Reinforcement (SOR), Karsten Wolstad, one of Det Kongelige Teater's principal sound designers, has employed Out Board's TiMax delay matrix and showcontrol software at the heart of the theatre's new playhouse sound system. The main design objective was to maximise dramatic impact by optimising localisation of amplified voices and effects throughout even the largest performances on the vast main stage.

Wolstad and sound design colleague Jonas Vest worked closely with Out Board's Robin Whittaker to create an SOR-based sound system design to supply unobtrusive and subtle amplification with accurate audio image localisation and hence good intelligibility for all audience members.

Brazil - Held at São Paulo's Morumbi Stadium on 21 November, the 2010 World Cup qualifying game between South American soccer heavyweights Brazil and Uruguay sounded superb, thanks to an Electro-Voice sound reinforcement system deployed by the Tukasom Company.

The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) performed the Brazilian and Uruguayan national anthems before the game, while DJ sets in between the soccer action made the stadium a massive party zone. Tukasom set up more than 50 microphones to capture the orchestra, reinforced via a distribution of cart-loaded EV XLC line arrays, powered by P3000RL remote-control amplifiers running IRIS-Net software. A Midas XL4 was at FOH.

"The fans loved the sound system performance," says Antonio Pereira Neto of EV's Brazilian distributor Teleponto. "Tukasom's system design was excellent; the high quality audio made a very

UK - Up-and-coming PA rental company Eclipse Sound & Light has made a major investment in a new line-array sound system, bringing the marques of Electro-Voice and Midas to East Anglia in south-east England.

"The new equipment made an impact from the day it arrived," says Eclipse's MD Andy Collins, "we're definitely the big boys in town now."

Eclipse, headquartered in Ipswich, is a company that has grown out of Andy Collins' journey through all aspects of the sound business - from retailing, to DJ-ing, to providing small PA rigs for local bands and weddings. "We accrued such a lot of equipment that it was easier to expand into a bona fide rental company." Eclipse was founded in 2003, and has grown steadily in its local market, building a reputation as a retailer, as a rental provider and as a system installer.

UK - Opened to the public in September 2007, the Lightbox in Woking, Surrey, is a new art gallery and museum which features education at its heart. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and a range of companies, charitable trusts and individuals, the building was designed by a team led by the creators of the London Eye.

Long-term Ampetronic client Scanaudio was the company contracted to install four low spill loop and three counter systems, ensuring that those with a hearing impairment lose none of the impact and excitement of the changing exhibitions and learning opportunities that form the Lightbox's remit.

Ampetronic's engineers designed the four low spill systems - two in the exhibition galleries, one in an education suite and one in a room used for corporate functions - which faced some significant technical challenges.

UK - Monday's widely reported Led Zeppelin concert at London's 02 Arena was played through a massive Meyer Sound Milo system provided by UK-based sound rental company Major Tom. At front-of-house, Big Mick Hughes of Metallica fame mixed the band, while Roy Williams handled Robert Plant's vocal.

The first full concert Led Zeppelin has played since they disbanded in 1980, following the death of John Bonham, was a tribute to the late Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969. The 18,000 "chosen" (upwards of one million people registered in a lottery for a chance to buy the 18,000 tickets at $255 a piece) began lining up outside the arena on the Friday before.

Major Tom, headed by Lars Brogaard, which recently provided the sound system for the sold-out Prince concerts at the O2, deployed a powerful sound system comprised of 72 Milo high-power curvili

UK - The new Vista 5 SR live sound mixing console from Studer has made its UK debut, in the hands of front-of-house engineer Simon Wooler and the Concert Sound team. The event, the LIVE07 concerts staged by The Scout Association, was a showcase for the Soundcraft Studer Group, with Soundcraft Vi Series digital desks handling monitoring duties and orchestral submixes.

The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people aged 6-25 in the UK, with some 28 million people participating worldwide. This year, the Association celebrated its centenary, and marked it with two unique entertainment spectaculars at London's O2 Arena, attracting 30,000 (two full houses of 15,000 people) to watch a cast of 3,000 Scouts, encouraged by guest presenters from children's TV programme Blue Peter.

UK - Behind the glamour and glittering celebrities of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, Soundcraft technology is hard at work.

Entertainment pro audio specialist, John Henrys chose a Soundcraft Vi6 live sound console to handle all the floor sound, VT and voiceovers. As general manager, Robert Harding explains, this is no ordinary show. "I know, when you're looking at it at home, you might think 'God that's easy' but it's a very complicated show. We have about 54 channels going into it and we're using about twenty of the outputs."

USA - Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, is well known for its competitive athletics teams, and the private, liberal arts college's sprawling athletic grounds have continued to expand with the recent opening of the Arrington Ice Arena. The venue boasts a regulation size hockey rink with spectator seating and standing capacity for more than 1000, and will host the school's men's and women's Bulldogs hockey teams, as well as synchronized skating and open public skating for the local Adrian community.

As with most ice arenas, acoustics are not among the venue's strongerfeatures, and with the 28-foot ceiling exacerbating reflectivity issues, intelligibility for the announcements was a significant challenge at the outset. "Particularly for synchronized skating events, the sound needed to be distributed evenly and without a delay pattern," observes Joe Jenkins of Adrian-bas

UK - Sub Zero, Essex University Student Union's new venue - complete with innovative technical integration by PAI - has recently won two coveted industry Awards - from BEDA and Installation Europe magazine.

Formally known as The Underground, the traditional 'black hole' student union bar was transformed into a modern multipurpose venue, complete with a KV2 sound system, BSS Soundweb DSP, Avolites Pearl lighting control desk and Robe moving light fixtures. All DMX lighting control data is distributed via Ethernet. The refit has dramatically increased the venue's capacity, as well as making it more versatile.

PAI's design team collaborated closely with the SU's general manager Antony Blackshaw and interior designers/architects Heron Design, who conceived a new look and ambience for Sub Zero. The technical integration also played a vital role in the physical and psychologi

The Netherlands - Employees at Duran Audio's factory in Zaltbommel, in The Netherlands, have been gifted an extra Christmas "holiday".

The imposed "holiday" was not a present from Santa, but instead was due to a power failure in the Zaltbommel area caused by one of the world's most formidable war machines, an Apache Helicopter. Just after 7pm on Tuesday evening The Royal Netherlands Air Force Apache helicopter touched power cables crossing the River Waal, part of the Rhine, causing a loss of power to over 50,000 households and many local businesses, including Duran Audio's factory.

Gerrit Duran, founder and President of Duran Audio, commented: "I was at home on Wednesday evening when I heard a strange low frequency sound. I went outside to investigate and to my amazement I saw an Apache helicopter with its search lights activated looking for a clear sp

Japan - Tokyo Bunka Kaiken, often referred to as the classical music Hall of Fame, is one of Japan's premier classical music venues, hosting everything from ballet, opera to full orchestral concerts and more. First opened in 1961, it also enjoys the reputation of being one of the oldest and most venerable concert halls in the country, and has welcomed an array of internationally renowned performers over the years. The smaller of the two halls, which is usually reserved for more intimate events such as chamber music, recitals and small ensembles, has recently undergone a sound system upgrade which included four C 16:4 dedicated installation amplifiers from Lab.gruppen installed by Yamaha Sound Technologies, Inc.

The C 16:4 is a mid-power 4-channel amplifier in the C Series family of dedicated installation amplifiers, delivering 400W per channel into 8 ohms. According to Shin Yama

USA - Jazz musician Jon Burr has purchased a DPA 4023 compact cardioid microphone for use on his bass.

Burr was one of the performers on this year's annual Jazz Cruise, which is supported by the Danish microphone manufacturer. Long time DPA ambassador Gary Baldassari was again chief sound engineer for the week-long cruise, working closely with five other engineers who included DPA co-founder Morten Stove together with American engineers Jim Fay, Gary Faller, Mark Deadman, Frank Roher and Jeff Watson.

The cruise on board the MS Westerdam sailed from Fort Lauderdale, calling at Nassau, St Thomas, St Maarten and Half Moon Cay, to the accompaniment of some of the greatest contemporary jazz musicians.

Burr, performing with Houston Person, was introduced to DPA mics by his studio engineer, who persuaded him to try to 4023 for live work. "I found it to be incredibly accurate a

France - The largest assembly of QSC products ever commissioned for a single project is providing site-wide digital audio networking and sound reinforcement at the new Center Parcs holiday village, Le Lac d'Ailette, in the French region of Picardie.

Situated on 140 hectares bordering the picturesque Lac d'Ailette in Aisne, the creation of this state-of-the-art, eco-friendly leisure and relaxation experience, is a triumph for the collaborative work of the architects, engineers, operators - and Belgian-based sound, video and lighting contractor, AMPS, with their elaborately-designed QSC digital system solution.

UK - Matthew Haycox' chain of Wildcats lap dancing clubs has developed a portfolio of eight prime sites. This includes his most recently-developed, two-storey flagship site in Leeds - which Sound Division has fitted from the ground up with an advanced, integrated JBL sound system and Panasonic plasma displays distributed across 11 zones.

Because of the complex nature of the installation - with sound relayed to 16 small private dance booths (five enclosed within a Bedouin styled tent on the first floor), four larger ones and the girls' changing rooms, as well as the general areas - clever digital source switching was required. This has been provided in the shape of the Soundweb London BLU DSP networking device, with local source and volume selection at the bar. Sound Division has also supplied a fully-equipped DJ booth on the ground floor, designed specifically for this style of

Norway - With two Soundcraft Vi6s currently in use with Turbonegro, who have been supporting Marilyn Manson on a European tour, the company's Norwegian distributors LydRommet have made a stellar start to marketing the console manufacturer's digital platform.

In little more than a year they have 14 Soundcraft Vi6s and four compact Soundcraft Vi4 consoles operating in the field, a considerable achievement for a country of under five million people.

LydRommet sales manager, Flemming Bjerke says: "From our point of view, it was important to be involved at an early stage. We were part of the original discussion group when the Vi6 was being planned, and to have part of that ownership makes us proud. Also, as one of the beta-testers we are pleased to say that from a user perspective the desk has been stable from day one."

Flemming's colleague and PA sales manager, Espen A

UK - Studio Monkeys Recording Studios in Manchester has equipped itself with a full complement of Audio-Technica Artist Series microphones. These are being used to record weekly live filming sessions for Bands From The Stands, a showcase for local unsigned artists, featured on the Good Morning Manchester programme that goes out on MUTV - 'The Television Channel Dedicated to Manchester United' - on Saturday mornings.

Darren Gould-Martin, owner and principal sound engineer, was responsible for persuading the show's producers that the performances should be filmed live. "The producers originally booked into the studio to film the bands miming," he says, "but I convinced them to record the performance live. They were suitably impressed with the results, and adopted the live format for the series."

The live sessions required an expansion of the stu

UK - As part of a world tour to promote their latest album Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, Foo Fighters undertook a nine date UK arena tour in November, culminating in two dates at the London 02 Arena.

Fronted by the irrepressible Dave Grohl, the band provided maximum entertainment via a complex live show, which included two stages. In order to cope with the ensuing Front of House audio requirements of the show, a pair of DiGiCo D5 consoles were put to use.

FOH engineer Bryan Worthen has been using DiGiCo consoles for three years, replacing the original analogue console he had been previously using with Foo Fighters. "I knew I needed to go digital or I would get left behind, although I fought it for a long time," he says. "But I had to make the leap and it was actually the band's management who told me about the DiGiCo D5. It was being used on the Be

"I took part in a DiGiCo demonstration in Vancouver some time back and, having spoken to friends and peers in the industry who use them, really wanted to get a DiGiCo for the summer dates in the US.

"For various reasons I had to wait, but starting on it in Europe and the UK worked out very well. I was able to go to DiGiCo's premises and spend some time with Tim Shaxson and Roger Wood, who got me up to sp
