UK - Barcelona pro-audio manufacturer Vieta has announced the signing of Mick Brophy as its new international sales and marketing director. Having worked part-time for the Vieta team last year, in the position of export sales consultant, Brophy is now making a full commitment to the Barcelona company, and will be moving to Spain next year.
Company manager Nacho Alberdi explained that the deal was the result of Brophy's impressive performances over the last 12 months, adding that his new team member's extensive experience on the international circuit would provide valuable rewards for Vieta in 2006. Brophy has, in the past, worked for Amek, Kling & Freitag and Garwood.
UK - Crest Audio has introduced the first in a series of new mixing consoles, all designed for the install market.
Sharing the same frame sizes as the company's HP-Eight Series, the new HP-W features two additional sets of alternative stereo outputs, including a dynamics section which can be used for recording purposes or as a versatile stereo output for delay speakers, secondary rooms, etc.
Other features include an ambient mic input and a dedicated stereo input module with four mono and four stereo inputs. All mono inputs feature line inputs via an additional jack to the XLR mic input. Another new module features eight-channel automix which can be disabled, making the HP-W ideal for the contracting market when no technically trained personnel are available. All input modules feature a BNC connector for adding a Lillite while auxiliary outputs will be XLR. Other provisions in
UK/Spain - Switchcraft has strengthened its international representation by appointing Madrid based Magnetrón, S.A. to stock and supply its connectors, audio and video patchbays and cable assemblies to the broadcast and professional audio markets in Spain.
Stephen Waldron, Switchcraft's director of international sales, says: "Magnetrón is a very well established and respected supplier within its market place and we are very pleased to enter this new relationship that will increase the availability of our products and introduce the Switchcraft range to new customers."
UK - Stage Electrics has announced the availability of a DMX DVD Controller to work alongside the Pioneer 7300D professional DVD player.
The DMX DVD Controller enables users to control the DVD player from a lighting desk. With simple DMX commands users can start and stop the DVD player, jump to a specific track, play it for two seconds, jump two tracks back etc! In a nutshell, users can coordinate video / audio source with lighting cues - ideal for theatre applications.
To get a fully functional DMX-controlled DVD player system, you need both a DVD 7300D player and a DVD Controller. The DVD 7300D has many features including the ability to play both video and audio discs, different sync functions and a serial interface to enable control functions from an external computer.
The DVD Controller is run by two DMX channels and, since the player plays both video and audio discs, th
New Zealand - Founders Theatre is home to a broad array of performances and gatherings for the roughly 160,000 residents of Hamilton and its neighbours in the surrounding Waikato region of New Zealand. Recently, the theatre's management decided it was time to upgrade the 20-year old sound system to a contemporary design that would, as technical officer Kelvin Ballard describes, "deliver consistent level and quality to every seat in the house, with both a high level of musicality and uncompromised clarity of vocal reproduction." The theatre settled on a configuration of three arrays built around 34 Meyer Sound self-powered curvilinear array loudspeakers provided by Hamilton's Audio Video Solutions under the direction of Hanspeter Frick, in consultation with Harley Richardson of Meyer Sound Australia.
"Events here range from international tours to very simple confer
UK - Fifty years after the release of their first recording, Don and Phil Everly are still packing in the crowds. On their current UK tour every show, from the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham to London's Royal Albert Hall, is sold out. Front of House engineer Dave Wooster is keenly aware that when people are paying £80 a ticket, it's very important to make sure the sound is absolutely right. "And the toys in my racks help me do that," he says.
Sound equipment for the tour, supplied by Capital Sound, includes a substantial compliment of XTA equipment, with the new DP428 audio management system playing a major role. "This is the first time I've used the DP428 in front of everything as the system driver," says Wooster. "We've got eight DP226s behind it, but the DP428 is driving the entire rig. We're using it to EQ the Martin Audio W8Ls on the main
Israel - Haoman 17 (Ha Oman meaning 'the artist' in Hebrew) is Tel Aviv's newest mega-club. The original Haoman in Jersusalem is universally acknowledged and consistently voted as the best club in Israel, yet the new Tel Aviv venue is billed as even bigger and more sophisticated than its famous forebear. Set in the trendy Florentine district of Tel Aviv, Haoman boasts a huge sunken dancefloor with elevated platforms, a live stage, five different bars and a secondary dancefloor separated by a peek-a-boo glass wall. At the heart of it all is a mighty EAW KF850 sound system installed by EAW distributor and systems integrator, Pro Touch Ltd.
According to Pro Touch's Shmulik Mazuz, the client evaluated no less than four audio systems from high profile manufacturers before selecting the EAW solution. "The customer already owns the most successful club in Israel, and he knows what
UK - Bloc Party has recently completed a successful UK tour and are currently on a 15 night European tour rigged out with a full selection of Evolution wired microphones. Featuring heavily in the mic line-up is the award-winning 900 Series which has won Sennheiser its fourth prestigious TEC Award in as many years.
Introduced in 2004, Sennheiser's 900 Series features a range of powerful transparent mics ideally suited for stage use with excellent transient response and feedback rejection. Bloc Party FOH engineer Pete Bartlett has chosen the e935 for Kele's lead vocals and explains, "The e935 has given me far greater definition on Kele's voice, crisp and clean, but it also copes easily with his wide range, and dynamic variations". An e935 and e945 are used by Matt and Gordon respectively on backing vocals.

Europe - Following the successful pairing of an Electro-Voice X-Line array with Simply Red on their last tour in 2003, Britannia Row has supplied the same system for the Simplified tour of Europe. Once again mixed by front-of-house engineer Gary Bradshaw, the system uses left and right arrays of X-Line cabinets, each comprising eight Xvls high-output cabinets and four Xvlt 5° trapezoidals for the lower section of the array. A centre array uses eight Xvls plus three Xvlt cabinets, while Xi1152 full-range boxes are flown two-deep at the side of the stage, with two more on the ground; six Xsubs complete the picture.
X-Line is powered by 16 racks of amplifiers, each containing four P3000RL Precision Series units, all under the IRIS software management system. Electro-Voice says Britannia Row has been instrumental in the development of this powerful software tool, providing invaluab
Ireland - Galway-based Alex Fernie PA & Audio Equipment Hire has consolidated its relationship with Fuzion by adding four Radian MicroWedge low-profile monitors to a hire fleet which already includes a substantial inventory of Nexo and Camco products (also distributed in the UK and Ireland by Fuzion).
Alex Fernie, who originally trained as a sound engineer in Germany, today supplies equipment to all sectors of the entertainment/corporate market. Earlier this year he acquired an eight-box Nexo PS10 system (plus subs) for servicing Druid Theatre's world premier and Irish tour of the Synge Cycle, and for general conference duties in the Radisson Hotel. He has now boosted his inventory with the addition of the Radian RMW-1108 8" mini MicroWedges.
The sound man was first exposed to the MicroWedge on system designer Dave Rat's Ratsound website, before gaining first hand
UK - Mixer manufacturer Soundcraft, one of the famous brands in the Harman Pro stable, has been busy over the past couple of years re-investing in its production and administration facilities at its headquarters in Potters Bar, which it shares with stablemates BSS and Studer - and, of course, Harman Pro UK.
Company president Andy Trott was last interviewed by L&SI in summer 2003. Trott had been brought into the company earlier in the year and had been busy streamlining processes and recruiting new team members to drive the Soundcraft brand forward - notably with the appointment of a new digital engineer to work on the new generation of consoles. Two years later, the Potters Bar base has been revitalized, and a major new product unveiling is just around the corner, although details are stringently guarded.
"We've had massive changes since then," explains Trott. "
UK - It takes courage to start an audio rental company and then service two relentlessly demanding tours - with brand new equipment - for your first job. But that's what Rory Madden has done with his new company, Sonalyst, which is providing audio for the theatre tours spawned by hit TV comedy shows The League of Gentlemen and Little Britain.
Madden's main objectives in investing in equipment were for everything to be brand new and absolutely state-of-the-art, and his choices included the XTA DP428 working in conjunction with Audiocore 8 software for loudspeaker control. "Rory knew the high standard of audio performance he wanted to achieve, plus the required wireless capability to make it easy to get this performance," says XTA's Guy Lewis (the only Guy in the village!). "With 500 or so DP428s already in use around the world, we could point to a lot of successful
USA - Masque Sound has ordered a substantial quantity of power amplifiers from German manufacturer Camco, in readiness for a new Las Vegas opening of Hairspray at the start of 2006. Ashly Audio, Camco's distributor in the USA, is supplying a total of 39x Vortex 6 high power amps which will be used with an L'Acoustics dV-Dosc system in a design by Steve Kennedy. Hairspray, a $12 million production, will open at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas in February 2006, starring Tony Award winner Harvey Feirstein.
Speaking on behalf of Masque Sound, Walter Yurgel commended the sound quality of the Camco amplifiers: "We own nearly 200 of the Vortex amps now, and use them a lot. We find them to be very warm, and they match up really well with the dV-Dosc loudspeakers. In fact, Camco has become one of the staple amplifiers of our concert touring division, used by artists such
UK - Adlib Lighting, sister company to Liverpool-based Adlib Audio, has recently been restructured, and has invested substantially in new Martin Professional, James Thomas and High End Systems technology to service a busy autumn of live work. This has included servicing dance guru Mylo's first full production tour, with Adlib supplying both lighting and sound.
Mylo's lighting designer Ian Tomlinson first worked with the band on a string of summer festivals, which then continued into the autumn with their own UK and Irish headline tour. He collaborated closely with video designer Dave Ross from Phantom to develop the stage visuals, taking the concept of moody back lighting, silhouetting and shadowing as a starting point. "The band prefer being lit from behind," he explains. "It's a challenge to start with, but once you get your head around the philosophy, there's h
UK - Lee Evans' XL tour is the hottest show on the circuit, and it's certainly the biggest. Since launching in the early autumn the hilarious, perpetually sweating Evans has played in practically every big arena in the country, and his management, Off the Kerb Productions, has added numerous extra dates along the way.
On Saturday 19 November the show's triumph was further established when Evans played to world record audiences for a single stand-up comedian of 10,108 at the Manchester Evening News Arena (MEN). Stand-up comedy is inherently intimate, which is at odds with the arena environment, so consolidating the performer/audience relationship in these huge spaces threw up its own unique set of challenges for Evans' technical design team. As production manager Mark Harris points out: "Lee's comedy style relies wholly on his audience's ability to see his every facial expre
UK - Attracting WOMEX world music expo to Newcastle/Gateshead was an important achievement for The Sage Gateshead. The event is the largest and most prestigious international conference and trade fair to visit the venue to date, and with that came some pretty huge challenges for the incumbent technical department.
Over 40 world music acts performed in three spaces over four days. Opening act in Hall One, The Sage Gateshead's variable acoustic main house, was Robert Plant and his band Strange Sensation.
For the venue's head of sound, Dan Adams, the event has been particularly exigent. He temporarily gave up his usual role and became production manager, handing the audio reigns over to Paul Astbury who can ordinarily be found at the South Bank Centre, where he is himself head of sound. With these changes in mind, you might be forgiven for thinking that to then road-test the late
UK - Midas is pleased to announce that it has appointed Milan-based Texim srl as its Italian distributor. Texim has been Klark Teknik's Italian distributor for 15 years, and the decision to expand the company's remit to include the Midas range of consoles is a logical progression given the increasing interoperability between the brands. This is exemplified in the November launch of Klark Teknik's Show Command integrated system of hardware and software which can interface with Midas consoles.
"The move comes at a time when the synergy between the two brands is stronger than ever, and it makes sense to have one distributor handling both," says Midas and Klark Teknik sales and marketing director David Cooper. "Texim is consistently one of our best European Klark Teknik distributors and we are confident that they can repeat this success with the Midas range. Their tec
UK - Lynnsport & Leisure Park, situated in 72 acres of parkland near King's Lynn in Norfolk, is one of the largest sports and leisure facilities in the country. The Sound Division Group recently won the contract to supply and install a sophisticated Tryka LED colour change lighting system with Pulsar control, a 24-station eight-channel Audeon wireless cardio entertainment system and numerous plasma and LED screens, plus an Abstract VRX Gladiator lighting system in the facility's spinning studio.
The brief was to provide a thoroughly modern yet sympathetic environment for exercisers using the latest technology. However, it had to be a system that would be easy for untrained personnel to use and operate. Sound Division installed 24 Audeon 28 RX6 wireless personal receivers on the CV machines and the same number of Audeon 28 CS wireless Csafe docking chargers. The AV distribution s
Italy - Italian manufacturer Outline has once again contributed to the sound reinforcement on one of the country's biggest TV shows Rockpolitik. In the colossal television studio in Brugherio - one of the largest in the world, fitted out with millions of euros' worth of scenery and equipment - the studio audience heard the host's and guests' speech exclusively via 120 of Outline's Micra II cabinets.
The reputation of these compact loudspeaker systems, say Outline, is based on their ability to reproduce the human voice in a focussed manner, with natural timbre and high intelligibility - even at high volume, and without feedback, say Outline.
For the area of the studio hosting VIPs, eight Outline H.A.R.D. 212 stage monitors with the company's unique (patent pending) "acoustic architecture" were used: these continue to make a name for themselves in high profile e
UK - Skan PA Hire has purchased a 60-channel Klark Teknik DN1248 Plus mic splitter system. The units have been built into a custom stagebox, designed by Skan's Chris Fitch, with custom wiring and panel work by VDC. The stage box has been designed to fit into Skan's existing multipin systems while providing the flexibility and demands that some touring acts need.
The splitter system went straight out on David Gray's UK tour, making its debut on Gray's Parkinson appearance, then moving onto another TV slot with Jools Holland before heading out across the UK for the December dates. The DN1248s Pluses have been used to their full capacity, with the need for FOH, monitor, multitrack and broadcast splits on several occasions, say Skan.
France - L-Acoustics recently took advantage of the 119th AES Convention in New York City to announce the worldwide launch of two self-powered two-way coaxial loudspeakers, the 108P and 112P. Both combine the significant advantages of L-Acoustics' proven coaxial point source technology, with the convenience of self-powered performance and on board digital signal processing, says the company.
Christian Heil, L-Acoustics president comments: "The introduction of a self-powered line of products does not indicate a change in our strategy, but an emphasis of L-Acoustics position towards multi-purpose, easy-to-use portable applications . . . It is not in our intention to extend the concept of self-powered speakers to the entire L-Acoustics range, however this approach seems relevant to us for small-to medium-sized multi-purpose systems."
UK - Shure Distribution UK gears up for its new marketing push with two new appointments to its marketing department. Uzo Onuora, formerly of international media monitoring agency, Romike, is now marketing manager of both Commercial and MI and Entertainment Divisions. Her primary role will be in the areas of market analysis and planning, which are the key skill she brings to Shure through her extensive knowledge and experience off print media analysis and public relations.
Faye Chang, in the newly created position of press and communications officer, will largely be responsible for press and external communications. Faye comes from the book publishing industry and brings with her 10 years' experiences of sales, promotions and publicity.
Further key additions to the Shure family are Anthony Short who recently joined Shure to take up the position of commercial area manager for t
Singapore / Malaysia - Allen & Heath has appointed Sindo Exports PTE Ltd as its new distributor in Singapore and Malaysia. "It is our pleasure to be part of the Allen & Heath family," comments Sindo Export's managing director, Mr. Koh. "With the increasing market demands on the Allen & Heath range of products, and our knowledge of the region, we are sure to create a prominent impact in the market."
"We feel that Sindo Exports was the logical choice for Allen & Heath's continued growth in Singapore and Malaysia. Mr. Koh and his staff are highly qualified, have strong local relationships and many years' experience in the distribution of pro audio products in SE Asia," comments Allen & Hea
Spain - Bosch reports that a purpose-built integrated conference and information system went live on 12 September in the debating hall of the historic Congreso de los Diputados, the Madrid home of the Spanish Parliament. The system is the first of its kind, say Bosch and, most importantly, was implemented without disturbing the historic and elegant furnishings and surroundings of the building - a key customer requirement.
The newly installed system integrates a Bosch DCN Next Generation microphone, voice and voting system, with an HP PC-based thin client and server information and display system. In addition to modern conferencing and voting features, this facility also provides parliamentarians with on-floor informational (office-type applications), messaging and display functionality, interconnected with high-speed Cat 5 data and conferencing networks.
