The show, which was staged in the round, presented some challenges in terms of lighting design.

"Working in the round at the RAH is a fantastic experience," says Bridge. "However, not only are you very near the action but in the gallery you are dealing with a long distance picture. My premise was to work on big bold strokes in all three directions with different colours, which gave the audience a guaranteed shape of cross light, backlight and front light."

The Chauvet Professional Concert Lighting Workshop gave students from four colleges in the Los Angeles area an opportunity to design a sequence to music of their choosing on the Chauvet Professional demo rig, working with GrandMA2 programmer Joe Spangler. Eurovision 2013 was an all-Barco show powered by a total of 60 Barco projectors, including 26 units of the high-brightness HDQ-2K40. The new LED has the beam angle between 12° and 36°, and provides linear colour mixing (with macro function) to produce variable speed bi-directional rainbow patterns, interspersed with variable pulse and strobe effects. Gobo patterns are achieved via rotating and fixed wheels, each offering seven interchangeable gobos (plus white). In addition the 1 x 3-facet prism is bi-directionally rotatable at variable speeds.

Thompson and Leitch, directors of production design company Mirrad, turned to the Clay Paky Sharpy when looking for a powerful and lightweight beam fixture for the show's effects floor package.

Taking inspiration from the band's triangular logo, Thompson designed a geometric set using lights and angled video screens with the show's lighting package provided by global hire outfit PRG. Peumans worked in close collaboration with the ceative director Bart Colby-Doerfler with whom he had also worked on the Holiday On Ice Speed show in 2012, and together they developed the concept for this highly visual, contemporary version of Grease.

The idea was to take Grease into the 21st century offering up a really rock 'n' roll version of the classic 1950's high school musical romance, complete with lots of cars, action, energy and excitement.
