Denmark - For seven days in November, the seaside town of Frederikshavn in Denmark hosted Light Visions, an international symposium and light workshop arranged with cooperation of the international lighting design organization ELDA.

Students of architectural lighting from around the world teamed with prominent lighting designers to create six intriguing architectural lighting environments around the city. Martin Architectural, whose manufacturing facility is located in Frederikshavn, was strongly represented, both in terms of personnel and lighting fixtures. The six lighting environmentsare outlined below.

USA - Lighting design for The Fray's world tour is a collaborative effort by independent LD Tory Stubby and Joel Wojcik of The Opera Shop, Inc. of Denver. The pair have specified Martin's MAC 700 Profile along with Atomic 3000s, Robe LEDBlinder 148 LTs, 4, 6 and 8 ft MR 16 ministrips. MAC 600s and lekos join the gear list when the band hits the road again in January. All lighting gear is being supplied by The Opera Shop.

"Besides looking for a new fixture we were looking for something that is less power consuming than the 2K," says Joel Wojcik. "It's basically half the power draw with almost the same output. And the speed is incredible."

Of the 18 MAC 700 Profiles only two grace an overhead truss with the rest on staggered T's two, four and six feet below the truss. "It gives the multi layer look without the trouble," Wojcik says. "All our li

UK - Entec Sound is supplying a d&b J-Series line array system for the current Tool UK and European arena tour, which FOH sound engineer Ian Hopkinson says is "the best system I've ever used".

Entec's systems engineer Stef Serpagli confirms that the system has been pushed to astonishing limits with the exceptionally high SPL levels demanded by the Tool sonic experience, "It's basically on 11 all the time, and it's holding up really well!"

The most common configuration for the arrays is 12 J-8 tops and four J-12s a side for the main hangs, plus six C4 tops, flown two wide, and four C4 subs per side as the side hangs to give 180 degree coverage. For Wembley, the main hangs were increased by four J-8s per side - adding up to the most J-Series that Entec has hung to date. Sub bass is provided by 14 J-Subs and 12 B2s, run in cardioid mode, arranged in a delayed

USA - Once reserved only for the largest of musicals, automated lighting can now be found in theatrical productions of all scales - as demonstrated by the acclaimed new play Frost/Nixon, which recently made use of the FocusTrack lighting tracking software to facilitate its move from the Donmar Warehouse to London's West End.

Directed by Michael Grandage and designed by Christopher Oram with lighting by Neil Austin, Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon re-creates and dramatises the legendary interview between David Frost and Richard Nixon, following the President's resignation after the Watergate scandal. The show opened at London's Donmar Warehouse in mid-August; such was the critical acclaim, it was announced almost immediately that it would transfer to the Gielgud Theatre in the West End.

This presented a problem for lighting designer Neil Austin, whose commitments to ot

UK - Special effects manufacturer Le Maitre has announced the introduction of a number of new effects products.

First, Terrafog is a patented design, brought about by a desire from the nightclub market to have a high-powered smoke effect to simulate the large liquid nitrogen fog cannons seen in some of the superclubs of Ibiza and Florida. The company says that, whilst the effect of Terrafog is not as big as the liquid nitrogen cannons, or as cold, it is very close - given the price.

Terrafog uses one or two Le Maitre G300 smoke machines to give a visual effect, plus carbon dioxide for the cooling effect, compressed air or nitrogen for the pneumatics and special fog fluid to ensure the effect disappears quickly. The combination of these elements gives a large blast of cold fog that can be blasted upwards, down on to the audience or across a stage, say the company, adding that T

UK - This Bedford club needed a face-lift - so the whole club was torn to bits and restarted from the ground up.

Designer Craig Trotter specified all the lighting for the venue - including the two main dance floors, the bar lighting, the VIP room, the ambient lighting, the lights on the outside of the building and even the lights in the toilets. An enormous amount of LED lighting was used to provide the ambient lights in each of the areas with LED fixtures utilised on every pillar.

Control of the lighting in the club is realised entirely using ChamSys MagicQ software and ChamSys MagicQ control wings. ChamSys MagicQ is a complete network system enabling multiple lighting and media systems to be interconnected via standard networks, Ethernet cables and routers. This makes a very low cost solution (network equipment is readily available from computer stores) with the significant

Germany - For over a century, the Friedrichstadtpalast has been one of the main landmarks in Berlin's night life. Over the years, the theatre has changed its name and function several times: founded as a covered market, then used as the "Renz" circus, it later became the Große Schauspielhaus, Theater des Volkes, Palast Varieté and finally the Friedrichstadtpalast, but the spirit and quality of the outstanding performances on its stage has not changed.

20 moving head luminaires and 40 scanners from Clay Paky provide lighting for the stage and the lobby of the theatre, together with many other standard projectors, with control from MA Lighting consoles. Both the lighting system and the consoles were supplied by Lightpower of Paderborn, which has been supplying the venue since 1984.

USA - grandMA consoles were featured in two back-to-back high-profile live broadcasts from New York City's famed Radio City Music Hall: the MTV Video Music Awards 2006 (VMA) and Fashion Rocks, a music and fashion extravaganza on CBS that kicked off the city's semi-annual Fashion Week. Scharff Weisberg Lighting furnished the grandMAs in support of lighting designer Allen Branton.

Since Branton doesn't run consoles, he deferred to lighting director and programmer Felix Peralta's choice of the grandMA, a choice that was seconded by lighting director and programmer Kevin Lawson and upheld by Branton himself. "When we do these shows we're caught between two worlds: we need to do something in music TV that looks like a rock concert, but we have to be in total control, constantly editing light levels and programs. More than half of what we do is refining the TV product. The grandM

UK - Lighting industry support charity Light Relief has relaunched its website at www.lightrelief.org.uk, to provide more and better information about its aims and how you can get help from them.

Light Relief was set up as a charity in 2001 by Rick Fisher and the late Tony Gottelier to help lighting industry professionals in times of extreme hardship. The organisation assists people by providing practical support or financial help - occasionally both - and most of the people that the charity helps are lighting designers or technicians, or members of the Association of Lighting Designers. Like most freelance people, they do not earn money unless they are working, so sickness, physical injuries or domestic crises can lead to dramatic falls of income. This, in turn, affects not just them but also their families.
