Australia - The Everingham Rotating House (ERH) is attracting attention around the globe. Borne out of the comment, "Wouldn't it be handy to have a house that could move?", the ERH is the result of thousands of hours of research and development and a dedication to the integrity of a design based on ecologically sound building principles.

Luke Everingham, the man behind the design and its fruition, wanted a house that met the following criteria: the cost must not exceed that of a conventional house of the same size and level of appointment; the layout and finish must be highly functional; it must require very little maintenance; it must be white ant proof and; must allow the occupants to maximise weather conditions, seasonal conditions and the outstanding 360° views on this property located in the Australian bush. The result is a house that rotates 360° - capabl

As ETC unveiled its London HQ to the industry, Lee Baldock spoke to the company's CEO Fred Foster about his latest unique creation . . .

UK - Back in June 2004, ETC unveiled its new $21m corporate headquarters in Middleton, Wisconsin, complete with an elaborately-themed common area for staff. Designed by the company's engaging CEO, Fred Foster, along with a talented team of architects and artists, this themed set-piece was described as being "like an old-time movie set waiting for its gangster extras, or a Broadway musical stage before the dancers appear".

Foster saw the theatrical concept as an homage to the business his company operates in. Based on the paintings of Edward Hopper, the 'Town Square' concept was designed to provide ETC's 450 employees with a more rewarding, communal space in which to work. When the company's European HQ in London moved recently from

UK - Stage Technologies have supplied the Royal Shakespeare Company's Courtyard Theatre with a portable automation control system. The new 1,000 seat theatre is a temporary venue for the RSC while major renovation works transform their permanent home at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The temporary venue has been designed as a prototype for the auditorium planned in the permanent theatre which will re-open in 2010. The new thrust-stage brings the audience closer to the actors to re-create the intimacy of the theatres known in Shakespeare's time.

The entire Courtyard Theatre project is estimated to have cost in the region of £6m and following careful planning it is envisaged that a large amount of the equipment and materials will subsequently be reused in other RSC theatres and to support its works in London and on tours in the UK and around the world.

UK - It would appear that business has developed a distinctly oriental flavour for AV installation specialists, Sound Division. Hard on the heels of the installation in the exclusive Just Oriental in London's Picadilly comes a comprehensive AV installation into a brand new bar called the V-Bar which belongs to the adjoining Mandarin Palace Chinese restaurant in Hornchurch in Essex. In this instance the client required a full PA set-up, lighting and plasma screen in addition to a background music system.

Sound Division's David Graham explained that the V-Bar is a new piano bar that is attached to the main restaurant. "It's a very picturesque setting so they wanted to make the most of it with a proper professional set-up." To this end, Sound Division supplied and installed a pair of Martin Audio Blackline F10 2-way passive loudspeaker systems on stands, a Soundcraft Foli

Germany - Traditionally utilities are housed in functional buildings, often outside of town, away from the scrutinous eye of urban dwellers, but not always. Centrally located in the city of Leipzig is the gas and steam cogeneration plant, GuD Heizkraftwerk. Owners Leipziger Stadtwerke GmbH sought to integrate the building with the more aesthetic structures of Leipzig's architectural centre and thereby positively influence the city's night time image. Commercially, the company wanted to visually brand the cogeneration plant with the yellow and blue logo of Stadtwerke Leipzig. In November 2003 the company presented IPRO Leipzig with a draft and implementation plan that called for a unique night time lighting concept that could achieve these goals.

Lighting artist Jürgen Meier was subsequently contracted and worked with Armada Signs, the leading lighting promotion company in centr

USA - D.J. Willrich Ltd (DJW), the audio visual and multi-media specialists, has produced a virtual viewer for the new Jamestown Archaearium in Virginia. It provides a live view of the Fort site as it is today, however, it also presents the Fort as it would have been in 1607, in scale and in perspective superimposed on the live view to the point that visitors do a double take to make sure the Fort only exists in the virtual view.

DJW were invited by Haley Sharpe Design to help deliver their vision of virtual interpretation at the Archaearium, which is a 5000sqft interpretation centre on the archaeological discoveries at Jamestown Fort, the site of the first British Settlement in Virginia.

David Willrich, managing director of DJW says: "We were very excited to be involved in this project. The idea of a virtual viewer is not new, but the marriage of 3D graphics on a live vi

Germany - As a live music venue' Stuttgart's Die Röhre has been packing in the crowds since 1985. In 1993 Jan Drusche and Peter Reinhardt, along with Nanno Smeets, took over the running of what has now become one of the longest-standing clubs in Germany. Today it boasts around 100 concerts annually, and is the most active music club in Stuttgart.

Originally fitted with a Soundcraft Series 600 32/2/8, the club - which operates on three floors - has now been updated with a 40-channel version of a Soundcraft MH2.

"The MH2, with its four stereo channels and 40 mono channels, eight VCA subgroups and the highly impressive 4-band equaliser with semi parametric filters, 10 auxiliary sends and six mute groups, meets our requirements perfectly," says Jan Drusche. "We have not been able to find a product with these qualities for a similar price on the market."

Poland - The Capitol Musical Theatre in Wroclaw is one of the most dynamic and thriving musical theatre stages in Poland. Both in artistic terms and in its rich history, it is an extraordinary institution, and for a year now has at its disposal a new sound reinforcement system.

The theatre has been operating without a break for fifty years mainly as an operetta house up until 2002. It was established thanks to the efforts of artists who moved to Wroclaw from all over Poland after the Second World War. The Lower-Silesian Operetta, the original name for the theatre, began its life with the staging of Johann Strauss' The Bat under the direction of Szymon Szurmiej, which was performed on 21 March 1965.

Up to the 1990s the repertoire mainly included classical operettas such as Offenbach, Abraham, Dostal and Strauss. In the 1990s Jan Szurmiej the artistic director and Marek R

Australia - Since announcing an exclusive distribution arrangement for Wireless Solutions wireless DMX512 solutions in Australasia last March, LSC Lighting reports that it has been busy answering enquiries about the product. Most recently, Australia's most iconic venue, Sydney Opera House, has chosen a W-DMX system for use with special events.

"We didn't purchase the W-DMX System for the usual shows as we can use our inbuilt Ethernet data distribution system for our standard theatre rigs," explained Phil Dunesky, Sydney Opera House's technical operations manager for the stage lighting department.

"Rather we purchased it to use on our more unusual events, such as foyer-based productions, and for the occasional set pieces that may be run on a revolve, for example, where running cable would be difficult to use. Quite often we have to light functions here at the Ope

Japan - Opened in 1989, Yokohama Arena has quickly become the standard of measure for all Japan's other arenas and convention centres, both in terms of its design and its business model. The arena is constantly booked with trade shows, corporate functions, sporting events, and concerts galore. It's so solidly booked, in fact, that when the old sound system was replaced by a brand new one from Meyer Sound, the installation crew was forced to work around normal arena operations and bookings, and could only remove the old system after the new one was up and completely operational.

Most facilities would close for a job of this nature, however, Yokohama Arena is not a typical arena. Accommodating up to 17,000 people, the arena has played host to such high-profile events as the Pride Fighting Championships and the Rolling Stones on tour. Amenities abound: a projection system with four

UK - The historic Coronet Cinema in South London's Elephant and Castle has undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment to create a stunning new live music and club venue. The 2,200 capacity Art Deco building, which began its life as a theatre in the early 19th Century before becoming a cinema in 1910, now houses regular live music gigs and club nights, with a newly-installed EV XLC line-array sound reinforcement system.

The team behind the Coronet re-launch includes Simon Parkes, the man who rescued the derelict Brixton Academy in the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, he has put live music at the core of the Coronet's new business plan, and wants to put the venue firmly on the touring circuit. So far, the club has hosted Franz Ferdinand, The Orb and Macy Gray, and is nurturing a commitment to showcasing new bands and avant-garde events.

Germany - Automobile museums are not exactly a recent invention. In contrast to other commodities, the horseless carriage became a cult object and collector's item just a few years after its invention. The new Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart has a more comprehensive exhibition concept. Its ambition is to structure the fascination with Mercedes automobiles under various topics and to establish historical connections. In that context the entanglement of the group during the Nazi-era and World War II is not ignored and even their participation in forced labour is explicitly stated.

The highly polished automobiles from the first motor carriage to the record breaking racing cars and Unimog utility vehicles, remain literally in the spotlights and constitute the visual heart of this collection.
