Judged independently by a panel of industry experts, the Awards for Innovation are respected throughout the industry for recognising innovative new product design. All successful nominees will feature in the Innovation Gallery during PLASA Show from 15-17 September at London Olympia, culminating in a ceremony at the show on 16 September where the winner will be announced.

South Africa - DWR Distribution will have a major presence at Mediatech Africa, the largest media and entertainment technology trade show in Africa, to be hosted from 17-19 July at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg.

UK - Chroma-Q has celebrated 15 years of LED innovation with summer BBQs and open day events.
The events, held in the Northern and Southern offices of its UK dealer, A.C. Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET), provided an opportunity for Chroma-Q users, including lighting designers, specifiers, rental production companies and venues, to get hands-on with the latest fixtures.
The full Chroma-Q range was on display, including its film and broadcast portfolio, featuring the Space Force and Space Force onebytwo soft lights, the Studio Force II studio light, and the Brute Force quarter Wendy alternative.
In addition, the multi award-winning Color Force II cyc light and the Inspire range of colour changing LED house lights were also on show. The Vista 3 by Chroma-Q lighting and media control range of software and hardware solutions featured at the event as well.

Dublin-based Ion Solutions will become part of the CT Europe & Middle East group and will be rebranded as Creative Technology (CT) Ireland after a transition period. The existing management team of Ion Solutions will continue to run the day-to-day business.

UK - Birmingham-based NEC Group gave a presentation of what’s to come in the new Bradford Live venue, during an event at the National Museum of Science and Media.
Formally the Bradford Odeon, the demolition work inside the building is now well under way, with many of the original art deco features revealed for the first time in over 40 years, as the concrete from the 1960s cinema structure is stripped out. The next stage of development will be the start of the renovation and restoration works, paving the way for a re-opening in the 2020/21 season.
The venue will boast the renaissance of the 1930s ballroom, which will become a 750-person capacity space, for conferencing and banqueting, whilst the double height main auditorium will be reinstated as a 4,000-capacity live events venue.

USA - Entertainment technology industry veteran Nils Thorjussen has helped develop key lighting control solutions, including the Flying Pigs’ Wholehog lighting console and Elements Lab’s VersaTube LED tube. Now, he’s back as the CEO of drone show company Verge Aero.

USA - The LDI trade show is enhancing its offering this November with an emphasis on the next generation of design and technology, including AR/VR, drones, live for broadcast, and experiential design.
Organisers say that these  technologies and disciplines will shape the future of live events and are therefore placing LDI as the place to discover what’s hot and what’s next. More details on these new subjects will be unveiled once registration officially opens in July.

Europe - Yamaha has announced an upcoming upgrade to its iActive Field Control (AFC) acoustic enhancement system.
AFC4, the fourth-generation system, features upgrades in DSP processing and hardware. Yamaha says that when combined with optimally placed microphones and loudspeakers, AFC4 operators can enhance or create any acoustic environment, even in an outdoor or roofless venue.
“By combining our collective knowledge in these areas to develop the new AFC4 system, it is possible to create incredibly natural and immersive acoustic experiences for both audiences and performers,” comments Joe Rimstidt, systems design engineer at Yamaha’s Professional Audio division. “We look forward to the exciting possibilities that the future holds for the AFC4 acoustic enhancement system.”

USA - Wireless intercom solutions manufacturer Radio Active Designs will host a daily Radio Spectrum Update & RF Best Practices presentation during this week’s InfoComm 2019.
Taking place at 11am on stand 6161, the event will be presented by the company CTO James Stoffo.
He comments: “As the TV repack and T-Mobile activation begins to wrap up, wireless microphone and intercom operators across the country are finding it particularly challenging to get their jobs done. UK - Nexo will present the Geo M12 mid-size line array in a real-world production environment as part of two roadshow events held in partnership with Yamaha this summer.
Visitors will have the chance to get hands-on with the three-line array systems in the Geo M family: the new Geo 12, the Geo M10 mid-size line array, and the compact Geo M6.The Nexo system set-up will include the PM7 and PM10 Rivage digital consoles, running the Dante audio network.
On 26 June, sound engineers, rental providers and audio installation professionals will get the chance to audition the full range of Geo M high-output line arrays in Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena.
On 3 July, the location is The Mill Rehearsal Studio in Wimbledon, London. This purpose-built production studio has more than 400sq.m. of space, with a trim height of 6m for the line arrays.

Israel - The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 was hosted by Israel at the Expo Tel Aviv and boasted over 700 Ayrton fixtures in its massive lighting rig.
Set designer, Florian Wieder, and Tel Aviv-based lighting designers, Ronen Najar and Dakar Azulay created individual looks for each of the 41 competing countries.
Wieder’s stage design was based on triangles and the number 12 - important symbols for Israel - while Najar and Azulay chose a large number and variety of lighting fixtures which allowed them to create enough unique looks to handle a show of this size and diversity. Key to their enormous and extremely adaptable design were over 700 LED lighting fixtures from Ayrton.

UK - PLASA has released the Lightning Guidance for Outdoor Events, a handbook that provides practical advice on managing lightning risk, crowd safety and the protection of temporary structures, electrical equipment and power systems.
The guidance aims to assist those involved in the production and management of outdoor events in making informed decisions when faced with threats from lightning strikes.
“The dangers of lightning are widely understood, however the level of threat at outdoor events where large crowds gather is often overlooked,” says PLASA in a statement. “This has been a growing concern due to the increase of outdoor events and number of people exposed.”
