USA - The annual Electric Forest Festival features jam band/EDM music on five stages at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI. But more than that, Electric Forest Festival has an experience mission: it's to enhance the music with a multi-sensory fan experience by locating art installations throughout the (actual) forest in which the fest takes place.

When lighting designer Travis Shirley was tasked this summer (his fifth year with the festival) with lighting the festival's Main Stage - called the Ranch Arena - he knew he also had an experience mission: to offer an equal opportunity lighting rig for both daytime and nighttime artists. To do this, he designed and specified a lighting rig that would cut through daytime ambience and that would also do justice to light up embellishments of the stage design. Longtime festival vendor Christie Lites (rep Robert Roth) worked closely with

UK - It's somewhat of an epic undertaking to install a 7:1 sound system into Wembley Arena, but that's exactly what Britannia Row Productions (Britrow) did when Bear Grylls' Endeavour tour began in October.

"Bear is a big presence on stage," said the tour's director Jim Baggott from Harvey Goldsmith's office. "As such every member of the audience needs to feel involved and a properly implemented surround system such as this goes a long way to making that happen. Everything in the production has to come up to that standard."

Britrow has some history in this area, "We were fortunate in that we have done something like this before," confirmed their project manager, Lez Dwight, "Not least the Hans Zimmer tour last year. So I was able to assemble an experienced team. Our system tech' Sergiy Zhytnikov has done a superb job, supported by crew chief Josh Thomas and the rest of the

USA - Although the Crescent City may be more known for Mardi Gras, it also does one heck of a job on Halloween. This much was readily apparent to the 100,000-plus fans who turned out to New Orleans City Park 27-29 October to enjoy the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience, or Voodoo Fest as it is more commonly known.

A must-stop venue for many of those visitors was the LePlur Stage, epicentre of the festival's EDM centric acts, a stellar group that included The Chainsmokers, Party Favor, Die Antword, DJ Mustard, Black Tiger Sex Machine and Cakes Da Killa, to name a few.

Leaving no doubt that this was a major EDM stage was the eye searing lightshow created by the team at Solomon Group. Their power-packed rig was anchored by a beefy collection of Chauvet Professional fixtures. The production design of the LePlur stage was done by the brother team of Jonathan and Matthew Foucheaux.<

UK - The Enchanted Forest is Scotland's largest outdoor light & sound show; in 2015 it entranced a staggering 62,000 visitors, even more impressive when you realise the location of Faskally Wood near Pitlochry is hardly a densely populated urban hub.

Organisers, The Enchanted Forest Community Trust, have ensured that for each of its 15 years, a fresh theme using the very latest in technology, has been designed to bring the forest and loch to life.

This year appears to be no exception. Running from 29 September to 30 October, the event has so far scooped awards from the Scottish Events Awards (Best Event Marketing), CIPR Pride Awards Scotland (Best Integrated Campaign & Outstanding Small PR Consultancy) and the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Business Star Awards (Business Growth Award) to name but a few. For the sixth year, lighting designers Kate Bonney and Simon Hayes joi

The festival is an annual event celebrating the diversity of cultural heritages across the world, giving young people a platform on which to showcase songs in their native language, accompanied by ethnic dancing. Belgium - It's not every day that the opportunity presents itself to light something completely different, so when Belgian LD Thomas Boets was asked to light four sites across the city of Ghent for their 2016 Floralien (Flower Show), a quadrennial 10-day exhibition and extravaganza of floral and plant artistry and life organised by The Ghent Royal Society of Agriculture and Botany, he jumped at the opportunity.

He also chose Robe BMFL Spots and LEDWash 600s among other lights to assist the process at two of the main sites - Sint-Pietersplein 'past and future' and Citadelpark 'a party for all the senses'.

The Floralien, funded by the Flemish government and the city of Ghent, has been running every four years since 1809, and this was the first time that Thomas - more used to lighting massive EDM events like I Love Techno and a diversity of others from industrials to opera in

UK - Cameron Mackintosh and Chichester Festival Theatre's critically acclaimed hit musical Half A Sixpence opened at the Noel Coward Theatre in London's West End on 29 October. Following a successful run in Chichester, where the show was performed on a thrust stage, production manager Chris Boone knew that transferring the show to London was going to present some challenges and as such got in touch with Unusual Rigging as soon as he knew the production was due to transfer.

Chris said, "Unusual Rigging are no strangers to me - they're my go-to company for all rigging challenges. The first step was to meet with Simon Stone, Jeremy Featherstone and Mark Davies at Unusual and discuss how on earth we were going to transfer from a non-flying thrust stage into a traditional proscenium arch."

While this was challenging in itself, one of the briefs from Cameron Mackintosh an

Brexit Fears - More than three quarters of the arts and culture sector believe UK productions will be damaged if freedom of movement within Europe is reduced. The finding comes from a new Arts Council England report, which claims increased administration costs from any further restrictions on movement are "likely to damage" business models across the sector.

The survey asked 1,013 organisations how they thought leaving the European Union would affect the arts in the UK. It reveals that, of 267 applicable responses, 75.3% said this would affect their UK productions by having a negative impact on their ability to bring artists and organisations into the UK. A large number of those surveyed were worried that barriers on bringing artists into the UK would result in a dip in artistic quality. Threats highlighted by arts organisations included "less sharing of skills, ideas and prac

UK - Electropop pioneer Gary Numan has completed a critically-acclaimed UK tour, with lighting designer Luke Edwards of Cue Design Ltd selecting the compact yet versatile Tiger Touch II to control the show's stand-out visuals.

"All my Gary Numan shows are very dynamic," says Edwards. "I find Avolites products allow me to achieve that very easily. The Tiger Touch II's intuitive functionality meant I could create a high-impact show with minimal programming time."

Despite touring to some of the country's more intimate venues such as Nottingham's Rock City and Bristol's Motion nightclub, Edwards did not hold back in creating a series of huge, high-energy looks. To get the most out of his rig, which focused on Martin MAC Aura XB, Ayrton Magic Blade and Robe Pointe fixtures, the designer drew on the updated features of Avolites' latest Titan version 10 software. USA - The Tar Heel State's 'Research Triangle' is home to some of the leading high-tech firms in the US and three large universities (Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State), as well as a vibrant, diverse millennial population. Fused together, these ingredients have turned the area into a hotbed of electronic music. A driving force behind this trend is Pulse EDM, a group dedicated to putting on some of the best dance parties anywhere.

This Halloween, the epicentre of the local EDM scene was the venerable downtown Lincoln Theatre, where Pulse brought five of the area's top DJs on stage to throw down some dope bass lines and traps. Revving up the intensity level many times over was a relentless, eye-searing light show that featured 12 Intimidator Scan LED 300 moving fixtures and four Hurricane Haze 2D water-based haze machines from Chauvet DJ.

The Netherlands - United has been a long-term user of Merging Technologies' Pyramix audio workstation and has recorded a multitude of live and sports events in the Netherlands, including concerts by music sensation, André Rieu. As a leading TV post-production facility, the preservation of audio quality has always been a high priority. The choice of console was obviously a critical matter for the United team. AMS Neve offered the perfect hybrid scenario.

The Neve Genesys Black incorporates the highest quality analogue circuitry with control of the DAW. As a direct result of this sale, engineers from Merging and AMS Neve are making significant improvements to the functionality of the controller and these will be available in the next firmware update.

In this typically all-digital world, reverting to analogue might seem a retrograde step. Not so. The United specialists

USA - In an example of an EDM-style lighting fixture in a House of Worship, Nate Nohling, lead lighting designer at Eagle Brook Church, a large ministry with six campuses across Minnesota, chose 156 ACL 360 Bar LED battens as the staple of a new lighting design.

"The number one thing I was shooting for when designing this set was impact," Nohling explains. "I wanted to have a large quantity of fixtures that had the ability to create the impact we were looking for. That meant we needed a fixture that fit a price point that allowed us to have enough across all of our campuses to make an impact and a powerful beam from each fixture. We looked at a lot of different fixtures and the ACL 360 Bars were a great solution for what we needed."

Eagle Brook's six campuses range from large purpose-built facilities to more traditional church buildings to auditoriums. All of Eagle Brook's

UK - There are no easy roads where Bring me the Horizon (BMTH) are concerned; every year of their 12-year history is potholed by upheaval. Stylistic change has been mirrored by a rotating musicianship, though the four original core members, Sykes, Malia, Kean and Nichols have endured, with Jordan Fish joining in 2012.

The changes have produced a remarkable body of work and it's a mark of their durability that this autumn BMTH embark on their most ambitious European tour yet. "The show is a complete re-design from what fans saw last year for the launch of 'That's the Spirit'," says the band's production manager Rob Highcroft. "Louis Oliver at Okulus has created a three-dimensional video environment for the band that will startle all who come to see them."

Oliver's design is both radical and huge: "It's a massive commitment of gear and people for us," said Alex Leinster from

USA - MCA Nashville recording artist Clare Dunn is now making a name for herself as one of the hottest touring artists. Having already opened for many of country music's biggest stars, the Colorado native has embarked on her first solo tour and production designer Mike Marcario was brought on to create a high-energy design that could accentuate the artist.

To bring the full design together, Marcario worked with Nashville-based tour provider Elite Multimedia who supplied him with a complete lighting and LED video system that has the ability to be self-triggered through the artists backing tracks.

"Clare's live show is a super high-energy and a fun experience even without touring production," began Marcario. "I'm very happy to have gotten the call to help take the show to the next level with some visual aspects. When we started production meetings, our biggest goals for the

Australia - The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in the Sydney suburb of Penrith is known affectionately by the locals as 'The Joan'. Like the grand old dame herself, The Joan has considerable stage presence, with a 580 seat concert hall, 378 seat theatre and a 90 seat studio. Like any flexible performance space, the concert hall at The Joan hosts everything from touring acts to local community groups, which means the technical staff have to get shows, and looks, up and running quickly.

Taking their place among the lighting rig's static LED and traditional incandescent fixtures are The Joan's four new SolaSpot Pro 2000 LED source moving head spots. With a 600W Bright White Engine kicking out 26,000 lumens, the 2000s also include frost, 5 to 45 degrees zoom range, linear and three-facet prisms, and more.

"They've also got two animation wheels, two rotating gobo wheels

UK - The Last Five Years is written by Tony Award-winning Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown and tells the story of two New York lovers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The musical first premiered in Chicago in 2001 and has now arrived in London at the St James Theatre. The lighting designer for the show is Howard Hudson who approached White Light to provide the lighting equipment.

The Last Five Years opened last week to critical acclaim. It stars Samantha Barks and Jonathan Bailey and is directed by Jason Robert Brown himself. Regarding the production, Howard comments: "The set, which is designed by Derek McLane, is a dark blue brick box with naturalistic set pieces that are brought on throughout for particular numbers. One of the roles of my design was to give a sense of literal location along with reflect the sentiments expressed th

USA - ArcLight Cinemas has selected Meyer Sound cinema audio systems for three screens at new upscale multiplex theatres in Chicago, Illinois; Bethesda, Maryland; and Santa Monica, California. A fourth Meyer Sound system was installed earlier at ArcLight Cinemas' La Jolla, California location.

"We were very happy with the results in La Jolla," remarks Joe Miraglia, ArcLight's director of design, construction and facilities. "We continue to see Meyer Sound as the premium brand for cinema audio, offering a superior level of quality that our guests appreciate."

All four screens feature Dolby Atmos immersive sound.

"The dynamic range of the content coming out now is much more demanding on the audio system," continues Miraglia, "and Meyer Sound provides optimum performance by pairing the amplifiers inside the loudspeakers. We think that is the best solution going for Atmos.

USA - In a show unlike any other, Ian Anderson performs a complex rock opera of Jethro Tull, the revolutionary 18th century English agriculturist who also happened to inspire the name of the British progressive rock band. Bandit Lites once again provided the lighting package for the tour which uses an intricate combination of video and live music, as Anderson weaves a tale that features some of his most recognizable works, including Aqualung and Songs from the Woods.

English lighting designer Mark Wheatley crafted a precise harmonization between the lighting and video, as so much of the narrative performance relies on timing.

"Much of the vocal work is done by characters on the screen, so synchronization between lighting and projection is pretty crucial to the success of the show," Wheatley said. "It is quite a theatrical presentation so far as drawing focus

UK - Unleashed for the very first time in a uniquely theatrical experience, the UK stage premiere of The Exorcist left audiences terrified at Birmingham Repertory Theatre earlier this month. Hawthorn were on hand to supply lighting equipment for the petrifying production which brought the chilling tale of twelve-year old Regan McNeil to life.

Hawthorn worked with the show's Lighting Designer Tim Mitchell to provide lighting equipment to supplement The Rep's in-house rig. This included Hawthorn's new-to-stock Vari-lite VL1100TSDs, alongside Martin Mac Viper Performance and Viper Wash DX fixtures.

"There were several challenges on The Exorcist, including maintain the sleight of hand. There were many illusions in the show and the lighting had to distract the audience and conceal the effects" said Lighting Designer Tim Mitchell. "Control of the light was very important. We had
