UK - It was an emotional time for many last week when Blue Peter filmed its last show from BBC Television Centre. Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity were in the mix with arguably one of the biggest rigs in the show's history.

Back in December, Richard Martin Lighting purchased 100 Clay Paky Sharpys. Lighting designer Lee Allen, who is continuously striving to bring a fresh and energetic look to the ever more contemporary show, used 50 of them on Diversity's performance to bring "a very strong statement look to the urban dance troupe".

"The light output from such a small package is amazing," says Allen. "The fast speed of movement was breathtaking. The lamps were small and discrete enough not to draw the eye in the set, but the event they produced was gigantic."

Blue Peter is now being filmed from Media City, Salford.

South Africa - The Sport Awards Gauteng was broadcast live from Emperors Palace on Supersport 4 on 23 June 2011. An initiative of the Gauteng Province Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the event is designed to celebrate excellence and to inspire the South African youth.

Wayne Sproule of Pendragon Dezign was the production designer. Sproule had a spec from the client that gold was to be the main theme, and got the recipe just right: his glamorous set worked exceptionally well as a canvas for colour washes from Nic Michaletos' lighting design.

The services of MGG Productions were called in to provide the intelligent lighting, with MGG's Kevin Rieck hands-on as the lighting programmer on a grandMA. It was the first time Rieck had worked in a theatre production of this calibre. "It was a great responsibility and I was as scared as hell!" he said. "Nic Michaletos

Jason Reberski of JR Lighting Design, Inc. (Orland Park, IL), who has designed and programmed the lighting for the SODT show since 2008, found a new star to dance with this year: the Design Spot 1200C DMX moving head from Elation Professional.

Reberski included seven Design Spot 1200Cs in his moving light rig, which also contained eight moving heads from another manufacturer that were original

Germany - The new, purpose-built MDR high definition television studio in Erfurt, where programmes for the popular children's channel Kika are filmed, has upgraded its lighting system to feature 28 ADB ALC4 multipurpose modular luminaires in the role of asymmetrical cyclorama lights.

A new studio and the show's switch to HD entailed a new concept in lighting. Camera operators at the 600sq.m studio at MDR's headquarters laid down a stringent specification for lighting the huge cyclorama - which has a curved base with a 1m radius that merges smoothly with the floor to avoid a hard lighting transition. This stipulated a maximum variation in lighting of +/- 70 lux across the cyclorama, within the cameras' operating range on Kika of between 300 and 500 lux.

Thomas Jacobs of ADB Germany, which supplied the new luminaires to MDR, said, "The existing facilities, with 90 kilowatts

Australia - Staging Connections have been investing in JBL PRX612M powered speakers, the most compact speaker in the PRX600 Series designed to deliver maximum performance for its weight and size as both a stage monitor and a front of house main PA.

"We are moving away from unpowered boxes for most of our inventory," says Andrew MacColl, ANZPAC manager procurements and inventory, staging connections group. USA - Hollywood, Florida-based Sound Media has invested in a Turbosound Flex Array loudspeaker system. "My degree is in electrical engineering, so I am very analytical in choosing my equipment," says founder and president Lennox Foster. "When we auditioned speakers for this purchase, the vocal clarity of the Flex Array really caught our attention. It provides great intelligibility, and really highlights the subtleties of music at any volume. Combined with the other design factors of the cabinet, it was the clear choice for us."

Corporate and worship events comprise the majority of Sound Media's business along with a steady stream of music concerts. With venues ranging from hotel ballrooms and churches to golf courses and airplane hangars, flexibility and ease of use were critical factors in choosing a new line array.

Germany - Last month, the Johnny Cash Experience Band played a concert in the prison of Duisburg.

The set list corresponded to the original of Johnny Cash when he gave his most legendary concert in 1968 in the Folsom State Prison, California. For Rogge & Derks, supplier of event technologies, the installation works were an interesting experience. It was also an opportunity to deploy the new loudspeaker systems GRAVIS 12 and NOMOS LS from Kling & Freitag.

Top and bass were operated passively by means of the K&F SystemRack on only one channel. Thus, the PA system used only two of the four channels of a SystemRack. The two remaining channels permitted to operate one SCENA 15 monitor each for the musicians.

"The whole setup was operated on only one three-pin power socket, extremely simple and with excellent performance", said Oliver Derks from Rogge & Derks.

UK - For the fourth year running RG Jones Sound Engineering provided the audio production for Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage. The London based company, celebrating its 85th anniversary, supplied a Synco by Martin Audio PA, a custom designed Synco sub-bass array and Synco stage monitor systems. Additional crew and matching equipment came from fellow Synco Network members Ampco Flashlight of Holland, in a classic example of the network's international cooperation.

The production, for a bill headlined by U2, Coldplay, Beyoncé, Paul Simon, Elbow, Paulo Nutini, Pendulum, Plan B, Morrissey, B B King and Biffy Clyro, was based on last year's highly successful Pyramid Stage setup. It saw the team once again maximise audience sound levels while attracting virtually zero complaints from local residents, quite some achievement in Glastonbury's notoriously tricky environment.

Kenya - Electro-Voice has delivered the first Electro-Voice mid-sized line array loudspeaker system to its African concert sound partner Live Gigs Co-Operative AV in Kenya. The system was first demonstrated during the Kenya Music Week in December last year by Audio Visual Engineering (AVE) as a part of the event's live stage performance system. Live Gigs' new system consists of 12 XLC 127 DVX, two Dx46 processors, and six CP4000S amps.

Easy rigging and easy setup were two of the reasons for the system acquisition, the other being the Electro-Voice Dx46. This IP-based DSP enables the user to control the complete system from front of house using wireless network protocols. Complete system control and supervision via IRIS-Net software and its easy-to-use GUI was an added feature. The amplifier and touring racks were supplied with Electro-Voice power and audio distribution panels.

The Dance East and West designs featured a mix of Clay Paky Alpha Spot 1500, GLP Impression and Robe ColorSpot 700E AT moving lights, which were rigged off Supertowers at the upstage end and the tent poles further downstage and in the audience in both areas.

These were joined by Atomic strobes, Sunstrips, blinders, PARs, profiles and an assortment of other generic fixtures - with the aim being to

UK - Take That's Progress tour is breaking the boundaries of progress in more ways than one, "in simple terms we have constructed a giant man that spans the confines of the stadiums in which they play," said Chris Cronin from Total Fabrications Ltd (TFL). "He is simply huge, so big that the main PA system hangs from his finger tips!"

The 'Big Man' as he is known springs from the imagination of Es Devlin, such is his size that Cronin knew immediately special measures would be required. "As soon as Chris Vaughan at The Production Office (TPO) confirmed us for the job the first thing I did was make a trip with Nigel Tranter (our project manager) and Malcolm Richards (TFL's long serving Structural Engineer) to Stageco in Belgium. Even before we knew exactly how we would be building him we needed to determine how his form would interface between our st

China - Barco LiveDots, a Barco company, has partnered with Beijing Fortune Investment Management Co. to embellish Beijing's Blue Island Tower with a new high-tech outdoor LED display. The 407 m2 screen is powered by the latest TF-20 outdoor display system, which "produces excellent display effects while ensuring environmental protection and safety".

The base of Blue Island Tower's LED display is a full 32m above the ground, which requires an exceptional angle of visibility to allow viewing from close range. To meet this challenge, Barco LiveDots applied "a world-exclusive LED encapsulation technology", tilting the LEDs downward towards the viewers. This technology gives the millions of LED lights a consistent downward angle of visibility and visual range, while also decreasing light pollution.

Barco LiveDots provided an integrated solution for Blue Island

Welcoming half a million people over nine days of music, which included headliners Pulp, Bon Jovi, Kings of Leon and Rod Stewart, Arena Seating worked closely with the event organisers Live Nation to supply 800 tiered seats.

Hannah Farnham from Live Nation comments, "We brought Arena Seating back into Hyde Park because of their superior systems and service levels. It provided a real peace of mind to know the grandstand would remain stable during the shows when lively crowds were bouncing up and down on them, which was particularly true during the Black Eyed Peas."

In addition to the high level of engineering, Arena's project manager Dave Withey paid particular attention to the fini
