Germany - Alcons Audio will be showing the production version of its latest pro-ribbon line array system, maximising its carbon (cone) footprint and giving a glimpse of a new product group at Prolight+Sound in April.

The Dutch manufacturer will be exhibiting the production-version of the LR24 pro-ribbon line array system. Previewed at the show last year, the system marks an important advance for the company within the concert touring and large-scale installation market.

Designed to be able to deliver the same SPL as equivalent products in the mid-size line array category, but with 15dB less distortion, the Alcons LR24 system utilises the company's pro-ribbon technology to "set a new benchmark in terms of SPL, projection control and sound quality".

UK - Birmingham and Bristol, UK based AV rental specialist Central Presentations Limited (CPL) has boosted its stock of video projectors with the addition of the latest in lightweight, medium range, high definition machines from Panasonic - the PT DZ110 HD.

This is to meet the continuing demand for a highly portable, expediently sized HD (1920 x 1200) resolution projector around the 10-12,000 Lumen mark for the wide variety of shows, events and presentations that CPL services as a rental partner.

Ireland - Aviva Stadium in Dublin is the home of the Irish rugby union team and the Republic of Ireland national football team. Audio is provided by a massive JBL sound system that includes 105 Precision Directivity (PD) Series loudspeakers, augmented by Application Engineered (AE) Series AM6200/64 speakers. The system also includes Crown Audio amplifiers and BSS Soundweb London signal processing, connectivity and control products.

USA / UK - Danny Boyle's latest film, 127 Hours, famously recreates the ordeal of young mountaineer Aron Ralston, who gets trapped in a Utah canyon when a boulder slips, trapping his arm. The soundtrack, which was nominated for a BAFTA and a Satellite in the Best Sound categories, was almost entirely recreated in post production.

UK - inspHire reported a very successful Executive Hire Show this year. Enquiries for its hire software was up by 60% year on year and a sale on the first day of their inspHire Express solution from the 'Killer Deals' booklet showed signs that this year's show was one of their best ever.

ENTECH 2011, which takes place at SCEC on 19 - 21 July 2011, will now include a new stream in its educational program featuring international speakers from PLASA's extensive global membership base.

UK - Blackburn- based lighting rental company HSL has supplied equipment to the first BBC TV show to be produced at the new Media City complex & studios in Salford Quays, Greater Manchester.

Don't Scare The Hare is a new game show produced by Endemol which will be aired in April on BBC1's 5.30 p.m. Saturday slot. Lighting designer is Tom Kinane, with whom HSL has worked on numerous past projects. The show sees two teams of contestants pit their wits and their physical agility in a series of games which involves not scaring a large animatronic hare.

Lighting and colour psychology plays a key role in the production - if the hare takes fright during any of the games, the whole environment turns red for danger.

Entertainment Technologies audio division has sold a Nexo Geo S12 Series vertical line array loudspeaker system to Leeds based rental company Futurist Sound & Light, for use on clients' concerts, tours and other live events. An accredited UK dealer for the Nexo professional range, the deal was handled by A.C. Audio division's sales manager, Peter Butler from the company's northern office in Leeds.

Futurist is a major rental supplier of sound and lighting production to the live events sector, and a well established provider to the educational and professional theatre markets. The Pyles Club situated in the Latsia industrial area, packed in about 30 industry professionals from the country's PA companies, as well as freelance engineers and contractors for the first Adamson seminar held in Cyprus. The company's owner (and lighting designer), Ammar Jano, knew that the white marble façade of the six-storey building would be a suitable projection surface for SGM's IP55-rated Palco 5 architectural LED fixture - and that it would provide a dazzling wash which could clearly be seen from the nearby Damascus-Beirut highway.

In total 18 Palco 5's were mounted - either on the ground, or positioned at roof level - to deliver a stunning crossfade colour wash.

The Lighting designer for this sensitive production was Ben Cobham of Bluebottle, a design firm that worked collaboratively to achieve the best results.

"Whilst I was the lead designer I had a whole team of talented people working with me including Tom Rogers as assistant designer and he produced plans, concept drawings and looked after technical bump in," says Cobham. "Jen Hector looked after the design realization plotting the show - she is a long time friend and although not a full time employee, she comes to play from time to time. Frog Peck was production manger and Blair Hart was assistant production manager."

Columbia - Sound recordist Martin Abell has returned from the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias in Colombia with an order for two of Roland's R-4 Pro audio field recorders, after a successful recording and teaching mission.

One of the most important literary events in the Hispanic world, this was the sixth edition of the Hay Festival Cartagena, but the first time that a technical specialist from the UK office had attended to train local engineers in the art of archiving. "We were seeing too much material coming back in a variety of different formats, often low quality recordings, which in turn restricted what we could do with it," says Martin Abell.

UK - Systems integrator IVC Media, has announced it has supplied and installed new sound and lighting systems in the Savoy Hotel as part of what has been described as 'one of the most ambitious' restoration projects undertaken in the hospitality industry.

The two year refurbishment programme of the top London venue, cost an estimated £220m and saw the hotel re-open to the public in October. IVC Media's sound systems have been installed in the Riverside, Lower Thames and Lincoln rooms, the Riverside Restaurant and Lancaster Ballroom. Some of the rooms have featured in blockbuster films such as Notting Hill in the past.

Sydney - For four nights only, the Sydney Festival transformed Sydney Town Hall into a swing-dancing heaven - featuring a huge dance floor and floorshow, with swing music played by Sydney's all-girl Sirens Big Band, just as in the venue's halcyon days - but with plenty of 2011 edge. Sydney's original Trocadero had its heyday in the 1940s and 50s but was demolished in the 70s. Today, its spirit lives on in the re-imagined nightclub named the Trocadero Dance Palace.

Ballet News - Sir Paul McCartney is to write his first original orchestral score for a ballet performance. The former Beatle is collaborating with the New York City Ballet company (NYCB) on Ocean's Kingdom. "I am always interested in new directions that I haven't worked in before, so I became very excited about the idea," Sir Paul said. The production's world premiere will take place on 22 September. More performances will be announced later. In an interview with The New York Times, Sir Paul said the show was a love story based in two fantastic worlds - the "pure" ocean kingdom, and the earth kingdom with its "sort of baddies". In 1991, Sir Paul wrote the Liverpool Oratorio with Carl Davis for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's 150th anniversary.

Germany - Hamburg Airport claims to be the world's oldest airport still at its original location, with its first flights taking off in January, 1911. Exactly 100 years later, the airport celebrated by hosting live music and presentations on five stages. Carrying the festivities to 3,500 attendees were Meyer Sound systems featuring the new MIna line array loudspeaker provided by Blue Noise of Hamburg.
