UK - On the eve of staging the BBC Electric Proms 09, the Roundhouse in Camden has commissioned a new Martin Audio dedicated cinema system for its 102-seat Studio Theatre (where the BBC's New Music Shorts initiative took place to coincide with The Proms).

The venue ordered three Martin Audio Screen 3s as a conventional L/C/R system, along with eight Effect 3Rs as a cinema surround sound, along with a Screen Sub1A (1 x 18") from Autograph Sales. The resellers also provided consultation, product recommendation and design and installation assistance.

Purpose-designed for screening rooms, the Screen 3 is a three-way system, with dedicated mid-range and high frequency sections, while the Effect 3R two-way passive system is a reduced-height enclosure specifically made for screening rooms with low ceilings such as this, to ensure that it can still be optimally installed a

South Africa - With its past experience validating Soundcraft's ability to handle even the most complex setups and the 2010 FIFA World Cup coming to South Africa next year, Shattered Glass recently purchased the Soundcraft Si2 to prepare for the events ahead.

"We chose the Si2 because it is so user-friendly," said Adriano Landi, the technical director for Shattered Glass. "Any good sound engineer will be able to use this desk in a matter of minutes without using it before. It's compact, straightforward, easy to learn and so easy to train on."

Shattered Glass has already used the Si2 for several events, including the Coca-Cola Moment 4 Summer Recruit, the MNet Long Service Awards, and the Vodashop Spring Break at Sun City.

"The Si2 is an absolute pleasure to work with and outstanding value for our money," Landi adds. "We

UK - The UK music industry has been given the opportunity to have a say on how best to achieve the priorities of a £multi-million investment plan for digital innovation in the sector.

The government backed Technology Strategy Board, set up to promote innovation in technology, is asking music businesses to visit: innovateuk.org to share their thoughts on how to maximise the impact of future funding programmes to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of digital innovation in the creative sector.

With the support of key influencers in the sector, the Technology Strategy Board recently published The Creative Industries Strategy 09, which identifies key areas of where emerging technologies and business models will have the most significant impact and outlines how funding might be spent.

UK - Green Day's ongoing world tour in support of its latest album, 21st Century Breakdown, has its monitors mixed on Studer Vista 5 SR digital mixing console. It was the first choice for monitor mixer Beau Alexander, who has worked with the multi-platinum Green Day since 2004's American Idiot world tour.

Alexander, who has also mixed for artists including Tool, Hootie and The Blowfish and My Chemical Romance, says the Vista 5 is an excellent fit with the Green Day tour. "What makes it a great fit for Green Day is the number of outputs it has," he says.

"When we started the 21st Century Breakdown record cycle, I didn't know if we were going to be using in-ears or wedges for monitoring, so I had to set the desk up for both, and when I did that I was using somewhere around 40 outputs, which the Vista 5 can easily handle."

UK - After a five-year hiatus, the long-running quartet Phish reformed earlier this year, culminating in a new release Joy and subsequent 27-date national tour including headline spots at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a four-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.

During the first leg of the tour, FOH engineer, Garry Brown made the decision to switch mid-stream to a DiGiCo SD7. And after a laborious and exhaustive A/B comparison of his current console and the SD7, the decision was made. Aside from a brief outing with the band Third Day in 2004 on a DiGiCo D5, this was Brown's first extensive hands-on experience with a DiGiCo console.

"During the first leg of the tour, we had been using another digital console, which in the context of the live sound of the shows had not been an issue. We came to realize that the board tapes that were released for downloads

USA - The Howard Community College's Smith Theatre in Columbia, Maryland, has installed an Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system, comprising an iDR10 MixRack and iLive-112 Control Surface, as the control centre for a new PA system.

A typical day at the venue might include everything from theatre and film activities to lectures and meetings, with the occasional live concert thrown in as well. With inputs ranging from a single voice up to 56 inputs and outputs that might be mono, stereo or full surround sound, it was critical that this multifunctional space have a sound system with maximum flexibility and sonic clarity.

The theatre seats 420 in three sections, with identical left and right mezzanines above the main floor. Designed by Acoustic Dimensions and implemented by AVI-SPL, the audio system uses a left-right-centre approach, with delay speakers addressing the mezzanin

UK - On 27 September, lighting designer Jeff Atkisson positioned himself behind a Martin Maxxyz lighting console in London's Royal Albert Hall, ready to light the 10th Anniversary celebration of Sing Live a concert consisting of over 600 singers.

"It was at times overwhelming, but also amazing knowing that I was walking into the Royal Albert Hall, yet completely prepared for the show before it even happened."

Atkisson's confidence stems from pre-visualization and pre-programming prep work done weeks before and an ocean away on a Martin Maxxyz lighting console. Atkisson programmed 100 moving lights and 200 conventional lights in Orlando, Florida on Martin's ShowDesigner lighting and set design visualizer, which was connected to a Maxxyz console.

"Programming 100 moving lights on a visualizer for one of the biggest venues in the world was probably one of

Austria - The Lindner Seepark Hotel is one of the most luxurious new hotels to open in Austria, located on the shores of Lake Worthsee by Klagenfurt in the south of the country close to the border with Slovenia. The distinctive looking four-star conference and spa hotel, clad in an ultra modern aluminium skin, opened to its first guests at start of July with a grand opening later in the month.

The new premium standard destination hotel has nearly 100 Tannoy loudspeakers installed, including small format CVS and CMS in-ceiling speakers as well as Di5 full-range wall mounted speakers.

Installed by Graz based AV integrators Pichler Medientechnik, the choice of Tannoy loudspeakers was driven by some good previous experience with the products in similar hotel installations, as company owner Mr. Gerhard Pichler explains, "We used Tannoy's CMS 801 and CMS 801Sub in a recent inst

The Netherlands - 24 October marks the worldwide premier of Amandla! Mandela: A Musical Journey to Freedomat Amsterdam's Royal Carré Theatre.

ShowTex Netherlands created a stage element that features throughout the show. The original ShowTex curtain was designed by stage and television veteran Eric Goossens.

Goossens reports: "I wanted to use a pattern that had significance for South Africans, a design that immediately put you in the atmosphere of the culture without feeling like you stepped into a souvenir shop. The bold black pattern with transparent openings in between creates depth onstage but also becomes a perfect prop for helping to tell the story. The dark lines can function as prison bars, and a dividing line between Mandela and his freedom."

UK - Red Square Audio's Paul Nicholson became the first person in the UK to purchase the new NTi Audio XL2 Audio and Acoustic Analyzer system at PLASA 2009. The advantage of the XL2, says the company, is its flexible user interface. Its measurement screens can be personalized with only a limited subset of the comprehensive functionalities enabled for simplified operator interfaces. Advanced users may access all menus, settings and store their preferred measurement configurations.

Previously having used the AL1, Nicholson was impressed with the replacement XL2 and took it away from the show. He has already used it at a concert for SPL and FFT mapping and for RT60 and STI measurements at a prestigious installation project on behalf of an audio consultancy company.

Nicholson comments: "The XL2 is a brilliant audio tool. It's really simple to use and gives me quick, accurate

Germany - The International Motor Show or Internationale Automobil Ausstellung (IAA) is the world's largest motor show and is held biennially in Frankfurt.

This year's show again saw some very innovative booth designs - based on sophisticated lighting designs and new construction techniques. One such design characterised the booth of Daimler AG.

Responsible for the lighting design was Richard Profe of TLD Planungsgruppe, who worked with his assistant lighting designer, Alex Orkisch and used a grandMA system to control more than 500 moving lights.

Programmer Demfis Fyssicopulos reports: "As usual it was an absolute pleasure to work with Richard and the team at TLD. Daimler AG took up the entire Frankfurt arena (Festhalle) for their booth. It was dominated by 45,000sq.ft of canvas that formed a majestic cone and funnel structure with lighting, projection and

UK - The Ulster Hall, a concert hall and listed building in the city centre of Belfast, has been equipped with a new Electro-Voice XLD line-array PA system by Park Audio Productions, after winning a multi-way tender from companies all over the UK and Ireland.

In 2007, an £8.5 million modernising refit was completed. In 2009, Belfast City Council supervised the selection and installation of a line-array sound reinforcement system, cleverly specifying a level of portability within the design so that elements of the system could 'float' between Ulster Hall and its sister venue, the Waterfront Hall.

A lengthy tendering process culminated in the contract being awarded to Belfast sound rental and installation company Park Audio, regular suppliers to the Waterfront Hall. "At the Waterfront, we've successfully hired in Electro-Voice systems for all sorts of shows, and I've

The SD7 was handed over by DiGiCo's Russian distributor, Aris Pro, at the beginning of August and was immediately put to work by S-Service on a festival headlined by Madness.

"S-Service chose the SD7 because it is the future," says Katerina Pogodina of Aris Pro. "Company founder Oleg Syadrysty is young and forward-looking, he invests in products which he knows are both state-of-the-art and going to be able give him a very long-term return.

UK - Drapes specialist Cover It Up has moved to bigger and brighter purpose designed and built premises in Camberwell, south east London.

This increases the warehouse and office workspaces plus the available storage capacity to accommodate the recent increases in stock. It also facilitates easier access to the City than the previous Peckham location.

The move has been prompted by a steady increase in business over the last two years. Cover It Up's Rhys Sion says: "With the economy in its current state, and the world's need to be more environmentally conscious, the practical and aesthetic potential of draping in all sorts of applications is really generating interest."

A sunken loading bay can be accessed simultaneously by three vans, which will also allow further optimisation of the new space, further increasing the fast turnaround needed to be achieved on a daily

Capitol House Productions managed the production for the seminar area, which featured the latest fashion in hairdressing, cutting and colouring techniques, including a simultaneous seven hairstyle tutorial from the Toni & Guy Artistic Team.

The audience of over 1,000 people watched the action on two 103" Panasonic Plasmas, sourced on screenlifters from PSCo and built into a set, flanking the hairdressers on stage. Once the hairdressers in each seminar had finished their cuts, a fashion show of the model's haircuts would complete the effect and give the styles instant wearability.

Amanda Murray of Capitol House Productions headed up the team and explained, "The seminar attendees need a very sharp image reproduction for the video content on stage. We chose these screens because they can produce a perfect image on a very large scale, enabling the audience to see even the ti

UK - This year's ninth annual British Invention Show saw TL Audio and Fatman presented with five awards, including the prestigious Diamond award for design for sister consumer electronics brand Fatman by TL Audio.

The flagship TL Audio console, the VTC, won a highly acclaimed Gold award for its industrial design which combines traditional valve circuitry with modern discrete transistor circuitry; providing low noise, wide frequency response and "some pleasing tube saturation for recording and mix down".

The Vic's award comes 10 years after its first introduction to the market and proves it is still a highly desirable and expertly crafted mixing console, that boasts a unique and clever design, still all hand made in our Hertfordshire factory in England, says the company.

Australia - Australian Idol, now in its eighth year is broadcast nationally and has enjoyed great success over the years. However, with such a well-publicised and popular format there is always pressure to improve on the previous year's production. Lighting designer Francesco Calvi of Calvi Lighting Designs, explains:

"What started out as a light show with a central screen on the first series of Australian Idol has now evolved into a 'big' light show involving several video screens accessed by media servers all of which are linked to the lighting console.

"When ArKaos released its new version of MediaMaster this year I decided it had everything I needed to take this show through the 2009 season.

"I am using two Power Macs to give me three video feeds. The first Power Mac is feeding the 6-mm main screen and the 28-mm video floor. I decided to run

USA - The technical staff for the a cappella pop group, Rockapella, together with its members, selected the AKG WMS 4500 wireless system and C5900 microphone as they tour the globe and lay the foundation of a new album. Rockapella are best known for their string of Folgers Coffee commercials as well as the theme song of PBS children's game show, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?

Commenting on the group's selection of the WMS 4500 and C 5900 microphone, Rockapella's high-tenor and primary arranger, Scott Leonard, said, "The microphone and sound system selection for an a cappella group is extremely important. The human voice is the sole instrument of the group, therefore selecting the right microphones is a highly sensitive process."

Rockapella took extensive time to review the entire line of AKG products as well as those from many competitors. "The mi

China - Martin Audio has opened a showroom - among the boutiques in a prestigious shopping district in China. The idea was the brainchild of wealthy businessman Regan Goh, who owns sound rental/installation company Huifeng Performance Equipment Co.

As one of Martin Audio's major customers, he came up with the idea of opening a full demo facility for consultants, production companies, dealers and installers in Panyu, a suburb of Guangzhou.

Ambassador for Martin Audio, David Bissett-Powell said: "China is the major market for Martin Audio and Huifeng is our main Chinese dealer - so the move makes perfect sense.

"Regan and I go back a long way, and he has purchased this building with the sole intention of making it Martin Audio - in fact the signage over the large shop window simply states 'Martin Audio'. Regan also supports King Kong of the Martin Audio Business Deve

UK - Performers at West 12 Shopping Centre in London are entertaining the public on Maltbury equipment as they browse. James Titshall at West 12 came to Maltbury in July with strict instructions: a lightweight, portable stage at minimal cost.

Titshall was originally enquiring about Metrodeck Ultra, Maltbury's lightest aluminium staging system. To save money and also most of the weight it was decided that Metrodeck with lightweight plywood and vinyl finish would be the better solution. Smaller decks were used for compact storage and it was absolutely vital that one person could easily assemble the equipment. The centre has already used the stage many times.
