UK - Ko Ko's in Leamington Spa, which boasts a large music bar, restaurant, nightclub and a roof terrace bar, has invested heavily in both décor and entertainment, appointing PSL to handle the entertainment lighting and sound design and installation throughout.

Peter Smith of PSL reports, "The management not only started with high ideals, but as opportunities were realised, these expanded the specification and flexibility required as the project developed. This made for an interesting installation and we had to be fast to react as requirements increased with tight deadlines. This in turn placed high demands on my suppliers so I was pleased I had chosen Community for the core loudspeaker systems; their range could meet any requirement and their distributor, CUK Audio, were well up to meeting our needs."

USA - One of the Discovery Channel's most popular and entertaining shows, Mythbusters features five special effects and science experts taking turns debunking (and sometimes proving) common and, often, silly urban legends. Based in San Francisco, the show has, for several previous episodes turned to the audio experts at Berkeley-based Meyer Sound, just across San Francisco Bay, for help in researching sound-related myths. The resulting partnership has produced fascinating, if sometimes predictable, results.

Previous shows involving Meyer Sound have explored myths such as the assertion that a duck's quack does not echo (debunked) and whether a human voice can shatter glass (confirmed). When the programme makers set out to apply their zany method to one more myth requiring sound expertise, they again turned to Meyer. "This story started with the myth that deceased Cali

UK This year's lecture, which takes place at the Concert Artistes Association, London WC2 on 16 May at 4.30 pm, will be taking the form of a discussion about the important issue of The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2006, which has introduced lower permitted sound, levels in the work place. The music and entertainment sectors have until April 2008 to comply.

Noise induced hearing loss is often cumulative and not immediately obvious. Any threat to hearing has to be taken seriously as the effects of overexposure to noise are irreversible. The HSE wants noise output reduced to 80 dB(A) first action level and 85 dB(A) second action level. The problem for the theatre and music industry is that "noise" is our living,

France - The operators of Paris concert club Le Nouveau Casino recently determined that they would need to improve their outdated sound system. The existing system had served them well over the years, but it was much too harsh and lacked distinction and coherence. A shootout between five leading audio companies was arranged. Audiolite based in Landernau, best know for doing sound production for the massive yearly Les Vieilles Charrues music festival, went to the shootout bringing in Adamson's SpekTrix True Line Source Technology.

Audiolite won the shootout and the final contract. The system for the venue was designed by DV2's Julien Poirot using Adamson's Shooter software. The main arrays are comprised of one SpekTrix 5-degree enclosure and three SpekTrix Wave 15-degree enclosures per side, providing coverage for the length of the club, which sits at about 18m (59ft), wit

UK - York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, was brought to life recently when the legendary stained glass windows were used for a series of projections as part of the Illuminating York festival.

Co-ordinated by Ben Pugh, the event enabled visitors to assemble between dusk and midnight over a three-week period and see 70ft high-definition portrait-shape projections depicting work from cutting-edge New York artists Mark Downie, Shelley Eshkar and Paul Kaiser under the title Recovered Light.

The task to deliver the content was entrusted by City of York Council to locally-based video specialists, YSL Videowall Hire; they in turn sub-contracted The Picture Works, whose director, Robin Wealleans, knew that his Christie Roadie 25K 25,000 ANSI lumens 3-chip DLP projectors were probably alone in being able to meet the stringent criteria.
