UK - The 31st Annual Vision Charity Ball has raised a total of over £100,000 for visually-impaired and dyslexic children. Themed as 'Carnival!', this year's event in the Great Room of the Grosvenor House was attended by nearly 1,000 guests, and, as usual, was energetically supported by professionals from the video, TV, production and broadcast industries.

With a visual presentation created by Skaramoosh, illustrating some of the good works of the Vision Charity in the past year, Chairman Larry Davis welcomed everyone to the party. Comedian Dara O'Briain commenced the evening's impressive entertainment, which featured acrobats, strongmen and even a mindreader.

No less skilled an auctioneer than the Chairman of Christies, Hugh Edmeades, took charge of the celebrity auction, which raised a staggering £40,000, including £18,000 for the Avid Media Composer Edit Sy

Qatar - For the $190 million opening ceremony of the 15th Asian Games in the Khalifa Stadium, Doha, four grandMA full-size, four grandMA light and 22 NSPs for the 44 DMX universes were employed by lighting designers Fabrice Kebour and Andrew Doig and associate designer Steve Shipman.

Forty-five nations competed during fourteen days to win gold, silver and bronze medals. They divided the grandMA system into four sessions: Alpha Spots and Conventionals; VL3000 spots, Cameleon Lyre and TP6 projectors; Searchlights; Mac 2K Washes. Each grandMA console had an identical console as a backup which was also used for pre-programming.

UK - The Killers are often described as the 'Best British band to have come out of America'. James Gebhard has been the band's front of house engineer since the spring of 2004 and, wherever possible, uses a combination of DiGiCo D5 Live and XTA processing for their live performances.

Presently, Gebhard is using a stripped down version of the D5 with 46 inputs and nine or 10 outputs for PA routing depending on requirements. "I want to try and get into the console's snapshots function more," continues Gebhard. "We have a lot of instruments on stage, but they're only used in specific songs and it would a lot easier and simpler between song changes if I used snapshots.

"I think the D5 sounds great. I took out a competitor's console in the States because it's part of the tools of the trade and you should learn what's out there. It sounds good, but not as good as

Nigeria - In 1986, the Nigerian capital of Lagos played host to the first Holy Ghost Service organised by Pastor Enoch A Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. This grew to become the monthly Holy Ghost Nights. In 1996, the first Holy Ghost Festival was held in the London Arena with Pastor Adeboye as its sole speaker.

Now called the Festival of Life, it has become a bi-annual occurrence and claims to be the biggest all night non-denominational gathering of people in Europe. The latest event was held at London's ExCel at the end of November and with attendance figures estimated at 32,000 meant that audio supplier Canegreen Commercial needed to provide a substantial amount of audio equipment with XTA digital signal processing delivering essential control.

The largest of the venue's auditoria, measuring 175m x 87m, was used as the site of the main gathering and a

USA - Tomcat USA Inc. has shipped a package of equipment to Las Vegas for the Four Wall Entertainment installation of a new entertainment lounge at the Green Valley Ranch Resort and Casino.

"Tomcat worked with us to create a completely engineered truss solution that significantly lowered the installation cost," senior project manager of 4Wall West, Buddy Pope, explained. After working on the design for the unique system, it was dubbed the "Spider Grid" because of its appearance. It is made up of dozens of ladder trusses that intersect at various angles, creating a grid over the floor. At all of these intersections, the ladders are joined by a specially-designed universal hub. These hubs also serve as the pick-up points for the system. Brackets were made that will attach to the walls of the venue to terminate the runs of the ladders through the venue.

UK - Long-time Klark Teknik and Midas enthusiast Ian Bond has been using the recently-launched Square ONE Dynamics unit for UK rockers Porcupine Tree on their recent DVD promotional tour of Europe and the US.

The Square ONE range is designed for ease of use and good sound at an affordable price point. Apart from these obvious advantages, Bond was appreciative of the eight channels of flexible, configurable, high-performance dynamics processing included in the 3U Dynamics unit. For the Porcupine Tree gigs, the unit was used to process the drum kit, with six gates across the kick and toms and two compressors used on the top of the two snares. "The compressors worked well in vintage mode, giving the snare more edge," he says. "The gates were also extremely good, very quick and, because of the different closing threshold, were all but transparent."

Egypt - Egyptian telecom company Orascom marked their 50 millionth subscriber with a celebration at the Pyramids in Giza recently. Guests were housed in a large tent overlooking the site and were entertained by an international cabaret headlined by the Pussy Cat Dolls. Italian production company K events were originally tasked to provide a light and fireworks extravaganza as a highlight to the evening but a combination of a very short lead time and delays in the granting of the necessary permissions saw the firework element removed and British lighting designer Durham Marenghi from Lumitect appointed as art director for the event.

Marenghi required dramatic floodlighting of the central pyramid and powerful aerial effects, so he approached Jack Calmes at Syncrolite in the USA, and 16 of the new 10kW dichroic searchlights and 12 8kW units were flown in from Dallas. The 10kW Syncro

Russia - The historic Novosibirsk State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet (NSATOB) is the biggest theatre complex in Russia, a whopping 62,245sq.m larger than the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. It is also now one of the most technologically advanced in the country, thanks to a recent £2.9m (€4.32m) government grant for renovation. From acoustics to lighting to general stage technology, the theatre is now completely digital. And, as part of the upgrade, NSATOB chose lighting systems by ETC.

The last time the 62-year-old theatre underwent renovation was in 1953 - after weathering a challenging early history. The original architectural design for the massive neoclassical complex was chosen at a competition in Paris in 1930. Construction began the following year, but was halted during WWII. During the war, the partially completed building was used to house famous works of art

With such a high quality and diversity of new and existing exhibitors to this show, I anticipate that visitor records again will be br

UK - When Task Brasil, the charity for Brazilian orphans supported by rock-legend Jimmy Page, decided to stage a star-studded fundraiser in London recently, MLsoundadvice was called in to provide a state of the art sound system for the event.

Concert organisers The Sanctuary Group gave members of Iron Maiden the night off from their current world tour (for which ML Executives are providing sound equipment worldwide) to play the small but exclusive Embassy Club in London's Mayfair district alongside stars Kim Mazelle, Matt Sage, and Paul Rodgers of Bad Company.

Iron Maiden's own sound engineer, Doug Hall, was flown back from the tour for one night only to take his place behind the console. MLsoundadvice opted for a small L-Acoustics dV-Dosc system, with two DV subs and three DV- Dosc per side.

"We've worked regularly at The Embassy but nothing with production values this

"It was our integral understanding of loudspeaker system and cabinet design that led us to the JBL Vertec system," Kingsland said. " Vertec is a new way of looking at PA systems. Lighter weight arrays, with fewer bo

UK - Blackburn-based HSL has purchased a 16-way Kinesys automation system, including 15 1-tonne Liftket vari-speed motors, converted to work with the Kinesys kit and Elevation 1+ hoist controllers, which went straight out on the Snow Patrol pre-Xmas UK arena tour.

Lighting designer Dave Sherwin wanted to move some of his trusses, while video director Blue Leach's design was based on having five differently shaped moving high resolution video screens (supplied by XL Video), so HSL decided it was the right time to buy a system.

"We'd been looking into this for some time," says HSL's technical director Howard Dean. "We explored the options and reckoned that it's the best automation system on the market, so it was really just a question of 'when?'."

Kinesys, complete with its proprietary PC-based Vector software, seemed to be the most flexible and user-friend
