UK - Production Services Ireland (PSI) supplied technical and production management services and co-ordinated the supply of all sound, lighting and video equipment needed for the 2009 Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen's 2009 - Ireland's biggest international festival.

This year was the 47th year for the event, a vibrant two week arts extravaganza organized by Queens University and sponsored by Ulster Bank staged in 32 venues in and around Belfast. It featured a wide range of performances including drama, dance, music, comedy, classical, opera, talks and debates, physical theatre and visual arts.

Singapore - On 24 September 2009, F1 Rocks Singapore kicked off a three-day musical festival surrounding Formula One's only night race on the F1 circuit. During the event at Fort Canning Park, 11 international music stars performed outdoors in front of approximately 30,000 concert-goers. Lighting designer Ross Williams and lighting equipment provider, The Show Company, relied heavily upon the new Vari*Lite VLX Wash luminaires.

"The F1 Rocks concert is quite different from my past projects as there were 11 different acts using the same stage for three nights," said Williams. "This is a challenge and the lighting design and solutions have to be flexible enough to cater to the different needs of the performers."

Georgia - This September, the central square in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, took on an extreme Edge - The Red Bull X-Fighters Exhibition Tour 2009 passed through the historical city to enthrall and awe the locals with an exhibition of extreme sports and live music with an extreme edge.

Freestyle moto-cross, fireworks, flying motorbikes, and instruments played with power tools are just a few examples of the adrenaline fuelled line up that the X-Fighters Exhibition had to offer.

Germany - Riku Mikael Kauppinen is MA Lighting's new regional sales manager for the Russian, Eastern European and Scandinavian market. MA's managing director Michael Althaus welcomed Kauppinen on board and is looking forward to a successful teamwork.

Kauppinen was previously regional sales manager for PRG Distribution. He has been working for more than a decade in various roles in the business including product sales and rental, lighting design and touring.

UK - Mission Media were approached by Nokia, who asked them to suspend a 6-tonne, 20m by 8.5m video wall in the shape of an arrow 40m above the ground in the shadow of Tower Bridge. In addition to that, it would have to rotate, while footage of the screen would be streamed live to the Internet.

Nokia's unusual brief was for an event to launch the 'Good Things' campaign associated with their global launch of the new OVI Service.

Mission Media contacted Neil Keane of Event production Management & Design (EPMD) who quickly assembled his team of long-term associates. A design for the screen evolved, as did details of the practicalities which would include a ground support stillage to dock the structure when it was not being flown.

UK - Tori Amos has embarked on her Sinful Attraction tour with two Midas PRO6 live audio systems running identical setups at FOH and on monitors.

FOH engineer Mark Hawley and monitor man Marcel Van Limbeek have recorded and toured with Amos for 15 years, and strive to reproduce the sound created in the studio in a live situation. To this end, the very same outboard units used in the original studio recordings have not only been reproduced, but duplicated at FOH and on monitors.

"It's a comfort blanket; it's what I'm used to," says Hawley. "Marcel and I make all of Tori's albums using an analogue desk, and this is the setup we've used over the years; we like the way it colours the sounds. As far as mixing goes it's identical to the mix that comes out of the studio console."

UK - Blackburn-based rental company HSL has supplied over 250 Chroma-Q Color Block 2 LED fixtures to US lighting design specialists, Innovative Show Design, to provide set lighting for the World Series of Poker Europe 2009 (WSOPE).

Attracting leading players from around the world, WSOPE presented by Betfair, complements the WSOP event, which is held annually in Las Vegas. WSOPE 2009 was held at The Casino at The Empire, Leicester Square and broadcast in the UK on sports television channel ESPN (UK).

For the second year running, Innovative Show Design's president, Christopher Runnells, was hired by Nevada based Poker Productions and ESPN (UK) to design the television and scenic lighting for the event.

Runnells needed a fixture that would not produce a multi coloured shadow and would give him the ability to mix the proper colour temperature of white light.

USA - Continental Air Show Productions travel across America with a powerful Community sound system that breathes life into some of the most spectacular air shows. Dave Olmstead and the crew from Continental Air Show Productions recently completed the Cleveland Air Show, with a rig that covered a show line over 4,000ft (1.2km) long.

A total of 24 Community Professional R.25 loudspeakers were arrayed to cover the crowd, utilising a pair of 5.8 GHz wireless remote systems to streamline the setup and minimise cable runs. A pair of Community RSH462 long throw systems covered the far reaches of the exhibition, and six R.5 subwoofers provided ample power in the low end.

UK - Entec Sound & Light recently purchased and then promptly employed the new Martin MAC 250 Beam on a House of Worship event at Wembley Arena, the Word at Work Conference hosted by Christ Embassy.

Entec provided lighting, sound, rigging and trussing, media servers, and set video projection for the event. Lighting designer was Entec's Ryan Brown who had six MAC 250 Beams, 12 MAC 700 Washes, 12 MAC 700 Profiles and 20 MAC 250 Washes as well as other automated and static fixtures at his disposal.

The Netherlands - Since 1977, the Uitmarkt (Outmarket) in the centre of Amsterdam has marked the beginning of the new cultural season. This year's edition took place over the last weekend of August at different locations in Amsterdam and attracted an estimated 500,000 visitors.

Focus Advanced Event Technology from Amsterdam was responsible for audio, video and lighting of 17 different locations with this annual event. The three largest stages featured Alcons pro-ribbon sound systems.

At the Nieuwmarkt, the Province Noord-Holland stage hosted performances of Trijntje Oosterhuis and Acda en de Munnik a.o. The Alcons system at this stage consisted of 18 LR16 compact line-array modules and six LR16B high-efficiency line-arrays bass systems.These systems were amplified and controlled by Alcons ALC4 controller-amplifiers with DDP.

USA - The Texan Dome at South Plains College (SPC) revealed its newly installed Meyer Sound UPQ-1P loudspeaker system at this year's graduation ceremony.

A replacement of the aged equipment purchased from the University of Texas in 1971, the Meyer Sound system was part of the college's modernisation efforts to draw its athletic prospects' attention to superior facilities that also include a fitness complex built in 2002. "This is our biggest recruiting tool," says athletic director Joe Tubb. "Once we get them here, it's the people that they like. But, you have to get them here first."
