The recently-completed Planet Hollywood in Dubai boasts the full Dare Eclipse Loudspeaker System, installed by Prestige Systems of Dubai. Other recent installs for Dare's loudspeaker products include Birmingham's new So Bar, the latest development in the city's fashionable Arcadian complex and three ice rinks for operator Planet Ice.

Selecon has parted company with former distributors AJS and ELX and set up Selecon UK Ltd. The operation is headed by Graham Eales, Selecon's international sales and marketing manager, assisted by Andy Trevett as sales manager. The essential logistics support, customer help line and stock holdings will be managed by Zero 88 Lighting Ltd from their South Wales base.

B&H Production Services Ltd is making new waves by expanding its operation and splitting the rental/show division and sales/installations into two separate companies - Sound by Design and Audiocom Southern. The company, a major Meyer user which has two qualified SIM II engineers on its staff, has just completed a four-week Arena Tour with Raymond Gubbay's production of Swan Lake.

Earlier this year, PLASA was involved with the making of a BBC Radio 4 documentary series, covering the development of theatre technology from the earliest days to the present. PLASA's managing director, Matthew Griffiths, took part in interviews with the research team, excerpts from which are used in the series. The first episode was broadcast on Tuesday 21st September from 11.30am - 12.00pm, and the eight-part series will continue at the same time each week.

Autograph Sales, has appointed Roger Harpum to the newly-created post of Meyer Sound product specialist. Harpum will be responsible for the sales and marketing of the Meyer Sound product range - distributed exclusively in the UK by Autograph Sales.

PA Company, System Sound & Light specified eight Midas consoles for this summer's BBC Proms in the Park. This was probably the largest ever gathering of Midas consoles for one event, which recently returned to London's Hyde Park for a fourth year. An exclusive open-air live concert, hosted by Terry Wogan, was followed by the live relay of the BBC's spectacular Last Night of the Proms finale from the Royal Albert Hall beamed direct to giant screens in the park. FOH three Midas Heritage 3000 consoles and one Midas XL200 were used, whilst backstage, a Midas XL4, two Midas Heritage 3000s and one Midas XL3 were used in the monitor position. BSS Soundweb and V-DOSC loudspeakers complemented the consoles.

Derek Gilbert, former managing director of Glantre Engineering, is to join Northern Light as overseas sales manager. He will become responsible for Northern Light's overseas development. Other former members of Glantre are also transferring to Northern Light, including Graham Fisher who will join the Estimating and Proposals section, Richard Passman, senior AV project engineer and Graham Lawton who will be located in Riyadh.

Confirming its position as the world's leading entertainment and leisure technology exhibition, this year's PLASA show had 13,574 visitors (subject to ABC audit). Of this total, nearly a quarter were from overseas. Exhibitors at the show were in a buoyant mood, noting an increase in actual sales during the four-day event with an improved power to buy among visitors. The PLASA show saw the highest ever number of exhibitors bringing the latest innovative products to be launched by the industry.New innovations included feature areas highlighting the expanding market for architectural lighting in a like for like comparison and a new style of display equipment area (sponsored by AV Magazine) which allowed the visitor to compare product in a realistic environment.Also new was the introduction of training workshops, and an expanded seminar and conference programme, which were all a great succes

EAW's new club sound system, The Avalon, has made its European debut in a newly-styled Waterford nightclub in the Irish Republic. The club has undergone a 1 million punt conversion of the 9,000sq.ft space into the Rhythm Room. Installers AVL supplied and installed the lighting and video in a contract worth 160,000 punts to them.

Three of the industry's leading event management companies have just announced that they are to merge. Business Pursuits Event Management, The Ultimate Experience and Richard Groves Catering and Events have been in discussions for the last six months with a view to integrating their operations to form a new £10m plus turnover group that will be uniquely positioned in the UK events market.

Bert de Haes has left Vari-Lite. In his place Vari-Lite has welcomed back Jimmy Barnett who is the new general manager for European operations for VLPS. Barnett, well known within the Vari-Lite community, will oversee the growing network of VLPS offices that he was instrumental in expanding during his earlier stint within the company (1984-1990). Working under Barnett will be the general managers of the regional VLPS offices: Ed Pagett (VLPS London), Jan Van Malder (VLPS Brussels/EML and VLPS Amsterdam), Jan Lambrecht (VLPS Paris) Adrian Bell (VLPS Dubai) and Sonia Sward (VLPS Stockholm and VLPS Madrid).

PCM hit the ground running after an incredibly successful PLASA and went straight into its autumn Motor School season. Responding to feedback from recent Schools, PCM reduced class numbers on the courses to enable two people to work on each Lodestar motor. Once again, the course was strengthened by James Thomas Engineering presenting a half day course on truss usage and how it integrates with motors. PCM's Motor School is fully compliant with the new LOLER regulations and at the end attendees are issued with a Certificate of Attendance which proves that they have been properly trained on the equipment.

CAST Lighting, the creator of WYSIWYG, has created a new program for lighting console manufactures - the WYSIWYG Developers Program. The intention is to create a dialog between CAST and console manufacturers, and the goal is to develop a more useful electronic connection between WYSIWYG and other devices. The current list of developers includes ETC, Strand Lighting, Flying Pig Systems, Compulite, Rosco ET, and AVAB/Transtechnik.

The Blitz Communications Group provided the AV equipment and software, support and technical back-up for Microsoft's Tech Ed Europe 99 event. Organised by Ultimate Events, and held in the Rai Centre, Amsterdam, Tech Ed 99 was the largest event ever held by Microsoft in Europe.The event opened in the main auditorium with a wide screen spectacular made possible by Blitz's unique Suite P3, the new broadcast quality presentation system. Blitz also supplied AV for each of the 18 breakout rooms, which hosted approximately 340 seminars over the four-day period. In all the company supplied 23 crews, 40 video and data projectors, 30 separate switchers, 100 interfaces, 30 distribution amplifiers and around eight miles of cable.

Sound Dept will benefit from the product experience of Steve Badham, who joins as EAW's new product manager. Based at the headquarters of EAW's UK distributors, Sound Dept in Abingdon, Badham's first challenge was the launch of Avalon, EAW's new club system; he will also be working with other pro ranges handled by Sound Dept, including Crest computerised control systems.

Roger Boustead has Joined Amek as customer service manager, moving from nearby AMS Neve, where he has been field service manager for the last five years. Boustead will oversee all the Amek service engineers and spares provision and will also be responsible for customer training.

Griven has launched the Kaleido MSD 575W into the ever-growing architectural lighting marketplace. The Kaleido features a mart CYM subtractiove colour mixing system to give even colour change, as well as anew patented wide-angled optical system. The product is distributed in the UK by Multiform.

Pro Sound & Light Services was recently commissioned to design a specific audio system for the Cross nightclub in London's Kings Cross area. The company's Andy Linklater designed and installed the system using RCF's Vision Series contractor loudspeakers. In designing the system, Linklater had to deal with brick archways, low ceiling heights and potential noise complaints from local residents. A total of 10 RCF Vision PA281 enclosures, four RCF Vision PA261 enclosures and eight RCF 18s800 chassis in custom-designed sub bass enclosures were used to realise the seamless coverage patterns.

Australasia's leading entertainment technology exhibition, Entech, is set to outstrip all previous Entech events when it opens at the Sydney Olympics site in Homebush Bay, 5-7 March 2000. Show organisers Connections report that sales have already exceeded those of Entech 98, with six months still to go. The show now occupies over 120,000sq.ft of floorspace at the new Sydney Showground and exhibition centre.Features of Entech 2000 will include the opening night's Carnivale under the stars, the Boulevard of Light, and the PA system shoot-out, while daily lighting comparison seminars will also be held, and technical tours of the nearby 110,000-seater Olympic Stadium will be available.The DTI has now offered PLASA funding for a trade mission to Entech 2000 for UK exporters.
